4890 issue

Hey guys,

Okay i have a new XFX 4890 1GB....i love this card,its a beast.

But one problem....its fan,its started making a clicking noise, just like the sound as if theres a wire been hit by the fan....that sort of sound, but theres no cables near it.
If i manualy turn the fan up in Catylst control panel then the noise goes.

Also ive noticed that, when im in game menus or loading games it maks a slight squeeling sound, now i heard this can be caused my some sort of electric coils on the card and that hot glue is the fix? lol

I emailed XFX about this and this was their reply...

Hi Shane, thanks for your message. Check the fan for any physical damage and make sure there is nothing obstructing it. Is the noise definitely coming from the fan, could it be coming from somewhere else? Thanks, Shaun.
checked...no damage from what i can see,and nope no cables in the way.

he replied...

Hi Shane, thanks for the extra information. If increasing the fan speed resolves the issue, you may just want to keep the fan speed a little higher than usual. It shouldnt make any difference or effect the lifetime of the card. However, if you are concerned, you can return the card to your reseller, as they hold the warranty for the product. Let us know if you have anymore questions. Kind regards, Shaun.

this card is loud enough of low speeds,i would not want to run it higher that 50% :D

Do you guys think i should return this card? RMA?

the card runs quite cool though 42c idle....not tested load temps yet but i bet she gets hot.

I don't know if XFX would take it back without pestering them sometime about it since it isn't a major issue. I say you keep it, and keep the fan speed at just high enough so the fan doesn't click.

As for the noise issue when loading games, I have the same issue with my 8800GT's. I would love to fix that.

Hey,

Its not XFX that has to take it back,Its Overclockers who i purchased it off :)

I know its not a major issue, like the card is failing or anything,But when you pay for something brand new,you at least expect it to fully work right and obviusly the fan has some sort of problem....i dont want it to just fail and my card fry.

You also have that noise when loading games too? Never had it on my 8800GT.

Contact ovreclockers and see what they can do. They should be pretty helpful.

Yeah, my 8800 GT's go berserk when Crysis is loading.

I'd just put the fan speed up. It could be that the fan is slightly off centre and when it's spinning at a lower RMP, it wobbles more, then when you raise the speed, there's less wobble as there's more force being put on it. If that makes sense?

The squealing isn't anything to worry about, like you said, it's coils on your card. You can cover them in glue, but I really wouldn't recommend it.

some cards are different than others, i know nvidia has more cards that have the coil squeal(at least thats what a google search turned up), but my gtx 285 has the squeal whenever it's under load and my gtx 260 is even worse(like folding, it sounds like it beeps). as for your fan, i can't help you there

well i think il just keep it then,it performs great i have no issue with that,i was just concearned that the fan might be on its way out or something and that it would cook itself :D

I might invest in a new cooler for it,But i suppose this would void warrenty eh?

Theres one here,But Akasa....dunno if it would be good.

But i think dannys right,It only does this slight clicking noise when the pc is idle and not doing much such as me surfing the web or basic stuff.

Does you case have a side window? If not you could possibly just turn the fanspeed up, and then put a piece of soundproofing foam on the side panel to block the extra fan noise..

No it doesnt,I have a Coolermaster 690 (Stock)...it has 2x 120mm fans on the side though.

Then might look into some sound absorbant foam? I think ebuyer and overclockers both sell the stuff. Would only need like a 10"x6" piece to cover the area where gpu is at to help with fan noise..

my first thought was a broken bearing, but that does seem more likely.

Didnt read all the responses but my xfx 4890 does the exact same thing. I'll just buy an aftermarket cooler.

More silent and cooler.

Yeah i read alot of pages with people who have purchased XFX 4890 got the same problem, you would have thought these noises would have shown up in their own tests :D

Anyway yeah i think il do the same, aftermarket cooler :)

If I bought a graphics card and it did not run correctly...it would go right back!

I would not even mess around, that's a lot of money to pay for a sub par piece of hardware.

well it runs great dont get me wrong...its just the fan,its noisy with the clicking....and if i dont manualy adjust the fan speed to at least 45% then this card will run 60c idle some days.

45% is not too bad really for a fan speed. If it acts normal with the fan at 50% then it might not be worth the headache of returning it. Does the Catalyst control panel have a setting where you adjust the fan and it stays like that? That would be ok if it did:) How does the card perform otherwise? you like?:D

60c idle...ouch...that's warm. I can't even get my card that hot, overclocked with added voltage running wide open Folding.

Yeah the CCP does have a feature to adjust the fan and it stays.

Ive decided to RMA the card,Like said here

It runs great realy....its a solid performer but that fan is an annoyance, and i would have to wait 2 years before i could replace that fan....or i would void my warrenty
