poor connection

for awhile now, i've been getting really slow download speeds. at one location i was able to download a file with a speed at about 600/700 kbps, even peaking at 1mbps. at another location, that same file only peaks at 100kbps. both locations with the same ISP. torrents are also extremely slow.

now i've always had a somewhat slower connection here, but ever since windows 7 it's slowed to a crawl. i'm hardwired into a WRT54G, i've just installed the latest firmware on it, but still nothing. any suggestions?

torrents are perfectly legitimate, many companies including Linux distribute OS's, programs, and various software packages via torrents. i never said i was using it for illegal downloading. i've been here a lot longer then you, and i know the rules.

i use comcast, i have the same service in two locations. it's always been generally slow, but ever since windows 7 it's been terrible. i'm thinking of installing XP or Vista and waiting until the retail version of 7 is out.

I know the rules too. And you don't get Malware/Viruses/Trojans or anything like that from legitimate companies (unless the site has been hacked - which is rare)

aviation man. who the **** are you.
anyway dude. it depends. some ISP will actually lower your speeds when they're busy so they can fully accommodate everyone. our old ISP used obsolete servers and could only hand so much, but were overbooked and would actually randomly limit speeds on people.
i'd also check your ports/firewall. with torrents they usually use like 8080 etc on theirs, but you could be blocking a port for downloading etc.
 
Did you recently install, or already have, a firewall with rule definition?

Sometimes they can block needed ports. It did it to me, and I had to change my rule definition.

yea i'm kind of suspicious of comcast, with there whole 250gb download limit. not that i've come even close to that, but still. yea i'm having trouble opening a port for utorrent at this particular location, not sure why, i'm only running avg free edition. maybe something with windows 7 is messing it up.

yea i've checked all my rules and exceptions and whatnot, ill double check everything though.
