CPU help

Ok so I need to run more programs at once and the CPU is always at 100%.

I got a dell Optiplex SX280 with a P4 3.2GHz processor and 3GB of ram (and it works basicly the same with just a 2GB stick in.)

I was wondering if it would be better to upgrade it, overclock it (I got a nice fan inside of it that can keep the temp down) or just get a whole new computer and sell this one.

I don't know much about overclocking but it does run near 24/7 so I'm not sure that would be a good idea.

If you want to multi task, i recommend you get a new computer. Or if your motherboard is an LGA775 get a Pentium Dual Core or a Core 2 Duo. check your motherboard support page for compatability.

If you don't feel comfortable opening your computer or don't want to build your own computer, buy a new one. Preferrably with a Core 2 Duo.

Pentium 4 processors are pretty old and slow. I would recommend upgrading.

If you want to build your computer I would look at the Phenom II 710 Tri-Core processor.

What are you planning on using a new system for and what is the price limit you are willing to spend?

as to what I read online about your motherboard. It accepts Intel Pentium 4 processor , or Celeron D processor.

And says it accepts up to 2gb of ram. I dont know how you got 3gb in it. Maybe one stick is not functioning?

well it says it uses the 3GB......

so I could upgrade to a Intel Celeron D 3.46 GHz Processor?

A Celeron D is even slower than your current Pentium 4 processor. You are going to have to buy a whole new system if you want to upgrade to a better processor. Do you feel comfortable compiling a component list and putting all the parts together yourself? Also what is your price limit for an upgrade?

this should tell you that it is probably time for an upgrade. I would recommend you stay with DELL though they seem to be doing fine in theses tough times they may be able to offer some deals right now on customized PC's (Not sure though)

I edited a post earlier.. Guess something messed up..
Around $300-400 max for a new system... I know someone who said they would help me build a computer if I ever needed one built and they having been building them for a while now....

If your under that kind of budget, like me, you should go with an AMD system, the boards a CPU's are generally cheaper than intel's stuff.
