Applications in Vista are not loading

After my laptop (Dell M1330) is on for a period of time and I try to launch an application it seems like it is going to work for a second but then never loads.

If I open Task Manager it shows it active as a process but again, it never launches.

Once this starts to happen, if I go to the Vista Orb to search for the applicatoin by typing it in...I type two letters and Explorer freezes until I restart it.

Also, every time this problem happens I restart Explorer and the batter icon in the system tray shows a completely empty battery and doesnt provide any battery data.

All of this wont fix until I restart my computer however during restart it stalls on "Logging Off" and I am forced to do a hard turnoff of the computer and then reboot. When I'm back up and logged in, all is good again.

I'm afraid if this continues to happen, all of this hard rebooting will mess up my computer. Not to mention, this process is extremely annoying.

I am running Vista SP2 on a Dell m1330 as mentioned.

Thanks all!

This problem started maybe 3 weeks ago.

The only program that comes to mind that I installed was Firefox 3.5. I've ruled out that as the issue though because I downgraded back to 3.0 and was still experiencing the same problem.

Secondly, I thought the installation of SP2 for Vista would help but I'm still experiencing the same problem after that installation.

In terms of Anti-Virus, I am running AVG Free ver. 8.5.339.

Thanks!

So you were having this issue before you installed SP2...hmm

Do you have a Retail copy of Vista?

If so, insert the disc and perform a Repair.

You most likely do not since the laptop probably
came with Vista installed.

You may need to back up all your data (photos,
music, etc) and perform a Full Restore.

Yes, the problem started happening just a few days before I did the SP2 update.

As you said, Vista came preinstalled on this laptop so I don't have anything more than what came with is.

I'm trying to avoid a full restore because it will take a while to get everything back in order.

Is there anything else I can try in the meantime that might work?

Thanks.

Mozilla, TweetDeck and at one time Word.

As mentioned, when I tried opening these applications they would not open...

Then, the next time I go down to the Vista Orb and try typing something into the Search the first few letters show up that I type and then Explorer freezes. When I run Task Manager to restart Explorer it restarts but then the program I tried will still not load, the search still freezes Explorer and my batter indicator shows no information.

When I try to restart it says "Logging Off" and stalls and then I am forced to hold the power button to turn it off.

I'm afraid with no Retail disc, there may be no way to fix your issue.
Not that I know of anyway.

I'm trying to avoid a full restore because it will take a while to get everything back in order.
At this point I would consider the restore time well spent, since you could
spend days trying to figure out the issue, when you could do a fresh restore
and reinstall all of your programs within hours.

Just looked and I might not have an actual Vista retail disk but I do think I have an OEM Vista Disk from Dell.

How would I go about using that disk to fix the problem?

Thanks.

That should work. Insert the disc in the drive, and restart the pc.

When it's restarting, keep tapping "Esc" and you should get a Boot Menu.

If it's not "Esc" you'll have to try other keys like "F10" or "F1".

When the BIOS Splash Screen appears (the one that says DELL) it
should be listed. "Press Esc to enter Boot Menu" or something like that.

Once you boot into the "Install Mode", select Repair.
