As secure as you can be...

I know this has probably been discussed numerous times before, but with current vendors getting better and better I thought Id reopen the topic...

We all know that its best to have numerous defences on our computers... i.e dont have all our eggs in one basket, total security, norton 360, yadayada...

If we were to create the ultimate security package built from seperate components what would you choose...

they can be either free or paid versions...

what would you have for AV (realtime scanner), firewall, spyware etc.. please add anything important that ive probably not thought about...

thanks in advance

For all you need is Kaspersky KIS, It is the best security out there. will protect you always, download a full version (trial) from their website and check it out. It has firewall, realtime scanner, basically everything you need.

But it is very involving, as any operation unless you trust the application (which i don't trust any) will need to get permission from you.

If you want less involved then go for Mcafee Total internet protection, (norton 360 in my opinion is not good protection)

From amazon http://www.amazon.com/Kaspersky-Int..._1_1?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1248452863&sr=8-1

$24,49

By prices KIS is also the cheapest.

Using KIS you will be as secure as you can be.

Your better off to stay away from Mcafee and Nortons. Get anything else but them.

As for as secure as someone can be i think I'm close to the most secure. I have Avira AntiVir for an anti-virus, Comodo for a firewall, Malwarebytes' for an on demand malware scanner, Spybot for realtime spyware scanning. Along with SUPER AntiSpyware for another back-up scanner, HiJackThis and other advanced cleaning tools. I also have WOT (Web of Trust) for Firefox along with ABP (Ad Block Plus). Oh and i also have many encryption programs.

And the biggest and best tool of all, common sense.

instead of so many programs running slowing down your computer, use Kaspersky, pay small amount for ease and comfort.

this comes back to the all eggs in one basket... but I think all of the software that respital mentioned is free.

Yes kaspersky is good...but even with that I would probably still use Malwarebytes, Hijackthis etc...

gives a range of results...different programs will pick up on different things...

Actually most of them are backup scanners and don't run in the background so they don't slow down my computer at all.

Exactly as mentioned in several different threads the main difference from paid and free versions is support, which i don't need. That too, if you only use one program or a variety of programs from the same company they mite miss some files, that is why i use many different programs which all have different detection methods and different detection altogether. It ends up with a lower chance of missing something.

I will try not to argue further, but just to say if you put anything against Kaspersky it will pick it up and if it does not then nothing else will pick it up, especially the free programs that you use, (little story, used to use all the different little security programs which were free, then decided to install a bought version (Mcafee) found around 50 different things, then installed Kaspersky and it found another trojan) Although you say do not have all eggs in one basket, with kaspersky you will not need to worry as it will have a soft pillow around every egg so that if it falls it will not brake,

Just to point out my opinion could be considered biased, as i said in my little story, what i've been through,

Even if you just use Facebook or other, and think you are safe, you are wrong!, click somewhere on facebook could lead you to another website with a virus, and if you don't have Noscript (mozzila firefox add-on) and proper security you are most likely not to even notice that you have got a virus.

Sorry for the long reply!

I haven't used security programs in so long... I used to use avast and it did well I guess. I know how to not get viruses so even with an AV installed, it really just sat in the background wasting resources. I hate any AV program that scans files when you open them because that could add up to 5 seconds to a programs launch time and if that program needs to access other files, the AV will scan those too. I've seen an AV program bring a relatively fast computer to a crawl because of all the things it scans. I've been running my PC without any type of security software apart from the default Windows Defender and Firewall for the last 4-5 months and my computer runs like a dream.

I have built 2 computers to test if they could manage to get a virus doing normal things like checking e-mail, the weather, shopping, etc... with the only security being their computers have the latest patches, one for my aunt and one for my grandma, both have XP SP3 now, neither have AV. They haven't managed to get a virus yet. My grandma has had her computer for about 3 years now. My aunt is on her first year.

I'm not completely against AV. When I built my brothers computer (yeah, almost my entire family has a computer built by me, and a few of my friends) I put avast on his because I figured he would get viruses because I know he downloads stuff from Limewire, I can't really stop him from doing that so I gave him some extra protection.

I have Windows 7 with the following.

1. Microsoft Security Essentials (it's still a tech preview but it's great).
2. Keep my system up to date.
3. Have a hardware router as a firewall. I also leave the Windows firewall on.
4. USE MY BRAIN AND I DON'T CLICK SHIT AND OPEN FILES FROM RANDOM PLACES.

I agreed.......
Just to follow up a little i tested all virus programs. for most AVG free works. I tried all the trial ver. I liked that NOD but bought Kaspersky internet security for 3 computers. besides keeping up to date with the system i always get security and critical updates. Google will get ya in trouble. Ya just don't know where ya land if click on a link. if im searching i always turn off script controls. scan once a week. thats about it. im trying that Comodo free firewall that seems to work well. At least i think. On the other hand if download i always scan the zip. then unzip then scan again.
thats it......think thats my best shot.

Malawarebyte and other utilities i have on the computer but run manually only. maybe once a week. not running in the backround.

One Antivirus program per computer. Not only will multiple virus scanner slow your system to a crawl they will likely see eachother as virus. It's not best to run in much of anything in Safe Mode anymore. If you check with the makes of the software they say to run in normal mode. Infact Malwarebytes have to be run in normal mode to work since it installs a driver to check for rootkits.

Yes it's called common sense and it's the only thing that can do a 100% job of keeping your computer from getting infected is you. The problem with AV software is that the malware has to be on your system before it can detect it and no AV is 100%. You don't even need an AV is your half way intellegent about your web surfing.
