you need an am3 board, like these, it doesnt matter which one they all work, it also doesnt matter if they support am2 or am2+ along with am3

Wrong, an AM3 cpu will work in an am2/am2+ motherboard. You just need to update to the latest bios:

Like said. AM3 processors will fit the AM2/+ socket boards, AM3 processors have both a DDR2 and DDR3 memory controller. There is not many AM2 boards with Phenom II AM3 bios updates. But 90% of AM2+ board do support AM3 processors.
AM2/+ processors though will (not) fit a AM3 board, does not have a DDR3 memory controller. To keep people from screwing up and trying anyway the Socket AM3 only has 938 pin holes. So a AM2/+ processor with 940 pins wont fit.

Bad analogy since backwards compatibility on the 360 isnt 100%
AM3 CPUs will work in AM2+ board but with slower HyperTransport, AM2+ CPUs will NOT work in AM3 boards because they lack the onboard DDR3 controller needed
