Are you wanting to do some heavy gaming? Please specify on what you're using your computer for to help us analyze on what's adequate for your needs. :)

IMHO, the GTX 260 / HD 4870 is the bare minimum for a "gaming" computer.
I just put together the system in my sig, and can run my two most graphically intensive games (Far Cry 2, FEAR 2, and Crysis SP demo) - at my monitor's max res, 1400x1050, with all settings completely maxxed out, with 4x AA, 16x AF, on all games, and Crysis on highest settings with 2x AA and 16x AF. If I drop down to 1280x960 on Crysis, I can go back up to 4x AA.
Even though my games are maxxed out, I'd still like to be able to NEVER see any lag whatsoever, such as multiple explosions happening at once with a whole scene full of characters... Which would mean I should upgrade to a GTX 285 or better.
So far, I'm extremely happy with my Phenom II X4 955 and XFX GTX 260 Core 216. I've yet to try a game that is unplayble on highest settings on my monitor's max res.
In other words, please try to spend at least $175 on a graphics card! Hope this helps!

Your not going to be able to get much at all with your current power supply even a 9800GT would require a new power supply. The best thing you can do is give is a budget and tell us what you will be using your computer for. If you won't a gaming computer then your looking at about $200+ for a good GPU+PSU.

You mean, if he's not a gamer? Because if he is, then he'd need to spend a lot more on his GPU.

Yep the minimum card I would use for newer games would be a 4850 or 9800GTX not only that but bigger and better the card the bigger and better the power supply needs to be.

Well i have been playing games like rome total war which work well on this computer with 512mb gpu but id like to upgrade for some heavy gaming in the future.

The power supply will be upgrade as i get closer to my final decisions, would a 500 watt power supply do the job.

Thanks

Well the memory of a gpu has little to do with it performance. A 10GB 9600GTX still would be nothing compared to a 512MB 4870. A 500w psu will work depending on what card you get anything like a 4870 would require a 600w or better remember it better to have more power the less. You said you wanted to upgrade so you can do some heavy gaming in the future for that a 4890 would be the best.

So would it be any point in upgrading the gpu from a gigabyte geforce 8600 gt at the momen.

Also how do u jusify the performance if its not the momery of the gpu.

Of course it's a good Idea to upgrade the 8600GT but only if you plan on getting something like a 9800GTX,4850 or your not going to see much of a improvement. The best way to compare a cards performance is by benchmarks of course http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/...ity/3DMark06-v1.1.0-HDR-SM3.0-Score,1339.html.

The 1GB 9800GT Gigabyte is good and has a higher point win over the Radeon HD 4850 Video Card. Which is good for gaming.

So a 600 watt psu would be the minimum required

There is no 9800GT better then the 4850 9800GTX+ yes but they are only a small amount better then the 4850 but they cost a bit more. I would go with a XFX 512MB or 1GB 4850 and a Xclio stablepower 500w PSU.
