Hi all. Is PC2-9200 CL DDR2 FLEX II series 1150MHz 4GB Kit compatible with my Gateway

Recently I've decided to upgrade my Gateway MT6840 (Specs: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2007/Oasis/1014554R/1014554Rsp2.shtml) from 1GB of RAM to it's maximum of 4GB (2x2GB). Ideally, I'd love to upgrade to 8 GBs of RAM, but since my laptop only apparently accepts 4 GB, I'd like to buy the fastest RAM kit available to me and I'm willing to dish out a good sum of money for some top quality hardware.

I've come across this PC2-9200 CL DDR2 FLEX II series 1150MHz 4GB Kit hardware today (Specs: http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_9200_flex_ii_4gb_series), and apparently it's the bees knees of DDR2 RAM. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my laptop can't take DDR3 RAM, but only DDR2, right?

If I'm right about that, then it looks as if I've found a great RAM kit packing lots of speed and a good cooling system. All I need to verify now is that if I buy it, that it will be compatible with my machine. I'm not going to install it myself, I'll go to Best Buy for that. I just don't want to get there only for them to tell me that the RAM won't work with my machine.

So, please, from what you can tell, am I okay to purchase this RAM for my Gateway MT6840???

Additional questions: Does anyone know of anything even FASTER than this RAM kit that would be compatible with my machine? Because if so I'd love to hear it.

Also, does anyone have any other hardware-related suggestions I can use to speed up my computer (or just generally give it more power) other than buying maximum RAM and cleaning up Windows?

You will wanna look for something else..

That ram is for water cool setup in a desktop!

You want something like OCZ pc-5400 667mhz ddr2 sodimm 2gbx2gb kit~

--You could look into a hard drive upgrade...you have a 160gb 5400rpm now...maybe consider a switch to a larger capacity and faster (7200rpm)

Also, don't bother paying bestbuy to install RAM into your laptop...do it yourself...there will be a little panel on the underside of your machine and the ram chips will be in there!! each chip will be held in by 2 little clips,...pop those and the ram will free itself and you can remove and install new ones!! 2 minute job!!

That one will work too.
But, if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, don't attempt it. Your most likely to break something if you don't know what you're doing. :)

Maximum memory: 4 GB

Buying anything over 667MHz would be a waste because the BIOS will underclock or slow it down anyway. You really do not have many options with upgrades.

These are your two best options for an upgrade. (New RAM and new hard drive)

The scorpio black is a great hard drive, probably the fastest notebook hard drive out there. a 7200rpm hard drive would be a great upgrade, as it improves overall system speed somewhat. Both Mushkin and G.Skill memory would be a great way to upgrade, although personally i prefer mushkin when it can be had for a similar price, due to it being a bit higher quality and having a bit better customer support than g.skill.

I have this hard drive in my Sager right now...this thing flies!

You will not be disappointed with this hard drive. It would be well worth the $75 it costs. You can get the RAM and hard drive for less than $150 and you will see nice performance gains:D:D
 
Haha! Good lord, these responses came so swift and fast, I couldn't even keep up, I deleted my 2nd post because by the time it was written my new questions had already been answered.

PS - For the record, I have explored the "simple" steps to installing RAM, myself. But honestly, I have too little faith in my hands. My luck in preserving this laptop has been so far so good, and so I'll not leave the RAM installation to chance... or my own capacity to mess up. :D

Watch the video, it is incredibly easy to install ram. Hard drives are just as easy, bb would probably charge you $25-50 to install memory(not counting the modules) which can be done in a couple minutes, and a hard drive which takes at most 10 minutes to install, they have charged upwards of $50 just for "labor".

Good to hear :) It sounds like your laptop is really important to you... So whatever you feel comfortable with. But I would take a look at the video bomberboysk just posted ^^
 
You know what, maybe it wouldn't be so bad to work up a little courage and handle the biz myself! I swear though, if I reach in my hand and stab my system with a static shock, I will die...

Quick question about the G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)... it says it's Dual Channel Memory, although I'm not sure if my Gateway MT6840 supports Dual Channel Memory. Should I be worried about that?

If your notebook does not support dual channel, then it will just run in a single channel configuration. Just when installing the memory, wear rubber soled shoes and do not work on carpet, and then the threat of static electricity is almost entirely eliminated.

May want to think about grabbing this set of mushkin though, lower timings (cas4 vs cas5) so its slightly faster:

Point of clarification: Installing a new hard drive isn’t the same as replacing the C: Drive, is it?
It doesn’t require me to reinstall all my programs and applications it just speeds up my laptop’s performance, right?

Yes, it would require reinstallation of the operating system(windows) plus applications. You however get a usb->sata converter, and use something such as norton magic to clone your hard drive to the new one.
 
Okay good to know. I’ll install the new RAM and see how the performance fares with my software and applications, and then if the need arises, I’ll definitely get that new hard drive. Much better than having to get a whole new machine.

Oh no doubt about this. Gateway would barely give me two words this morning because my warranty is out so I guess I'm no longer worth any of their support! But this place has instantly given me some fantastic options. Exactly what I was looking for. I will be back.
