Thinking about upgrading my video card.

I think I am going to give up on trying to upgrade the video card, maybe I will try to find the money and just build a new computer. So how much would a decent gaming machine set me back? I want something with an excellent video card.

That makes me think it is only a 240w power supply which worries me because if it is a don't think it will even power a 4670 do you have a specific model number for your XPS.

Here is a link to the 4670s any one will work just read the reviews to make sure it's ok.

Thank you Fatback, and thank everyone who has tried to help me with this problem. I decided to give up on upgrading this computer. I think I just want to build a new computer. I figure with my birthday money and Christmas money I could afford to build a $1000 gaming machine. However I never built a computer before, so I have no idea where to start. Think maybe you can recommend a book or guide. Where can I buy the parts?

I want to wait until Windows 7 is released because I don't trust Vista, and I am waiting on the spec's to Modern Warfare 2. It would suck if I spend $1k on a computer and it doesn't work with the game.

if you buy a vista computer now, you can pre-order windows 7 for free.
also, your computer may be outdated but it still seems kickass to me. 3gb of ram is really all you need and your processor sounds like it was excellent in its day. if i were you i would buy a geforce 9600 with gddr3 memory for $60 on newegg and buy a new computer in a year or so. oh and btw ive never built a computer but computer people usually buy their parts on newegg.com or directiger.com

After reading through this thread, I'm glad that you've decided to wait, save and build it all at once. Great choice!! The video card upgrade was going to be tough with your current rig. That power supply would probably need upgrading. CPU and Mobo would need upgrading, especially for mid-high gaming.

Here are my thoughts on a new build for around $1000.00

Mobo - $110.00

RAM - $60.00

CPU - $170.00

GPU - $240.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130478

PSU - $190.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703022

HDD - $75.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319

ODD - $27.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151187

Total with shipping should be around $890.00 (a little left over for case, monitor or operating system if needed).

This would let you take on any game on the market. Hope this helps.

Why in the world would you recommend a GTX 275 when a 4890 is cheaper and better not only that but the mobo you recommended supports crossfire so why would he won't to get a GTX 275 when he can get a better 4890 for less and get another later for crossfire. What would he need a 910w Pc Power and cooling PSU for. A CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX would be plenty to power everything and enough to run crossfire and is like $50 cheaper. Plus why get the Phenom II 945 when the 955 is just $30 more.

Wow, I think I hit a soar spot there! lol :P
Good call on the Crossfire, totally looked past that. As far as the PSU, I personally like to have room to grow in the future, my suggestions, I feel, leave room to expand down the road. Plus it's within the budget. I guess it's why it's called a "suggestion", because the OP can use it or not. Thanks.

Nice, but the video card seems a bit low end and I prefer Pentium processors. I have used them since I got into computing years ago.

No I was just a little curious to why you picked what you did It kind of came off like you were a noob trying to recommended a build because you overlooked a lot of things. Even though that PSU fits in the budget you could have used the extra money for a better CPU, Motherboard, RAM, etc. A corsair 850w is plenty to power just about anything and nothing more is really needed. Sorry if I seemed mad I wasn't I just get frustrated when people recommend a build but don't think it out all the way first you don't won't them buying something when he could have something better or the same for less right.

Your welcome I look forward to seeing how you do for your first time it is really easy.

Hopefully it's easy for me, I fear when I order the parts it will be incompatible or I will screw it up somehow. :o

I know someone from work who is really into computers I might enlist his help just to be safe. Thanks again. :)
