One of my computers has Windows XP. It was working great until one day when i logged in to discover that windows explorer wasnt running... the only thing on my screen was my desktop background. when i press ctrl + alt + del i get a message that reads "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrator".

I'm pretty sure i have some form of virus.

Is there any way for me to fix this without wiping the hard drive re-installing the OS? i'm not really sure what i'm doing, and any help would be appreciated.

See if you can boot into safe mode with networking.

Press F8 before the Windows XP boot screen appears to select it. If you can log into windows, go online and download a copy of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and run a full scan. When it's finished, click the "Remove Selected" button. Restart the system and see if that fixes the issue. If you can get into windows, run another full scan to get anything that may be hiding in the active processes.

You have to remove the viruses by running an antivirus scan and malwarebytes.
But they will not restore taskmanager disabled problem, since it is done by creating registry entry. In addition the virus also disables registy editing.
There is a software which can restore taskmanager and regedit. But use it only when ur computer has been made virus free.

Also, when you go into safe mode you will have the original Administrator account with no password if no one has ever changed those settings since Windows was installed, so there shouldn't be any priveledge issues if you test it on there after you enable the Task Manager.

Unfortunately no. You could spend hours and hours reconfiguring everything
and you could still miss something.

I've run into this exact condition and it's not worth the time. Just reinstall.

well i got everything virus-free, at least i'm pretty sure. i started in safe mode and malwarebytes fixed everything, including the task manager issue. Thank you!

but now i have a whole different issue...

when i log in i get this lovely error message... it says:

"The TCP/IP Network Transport is not installed."

i have no idea what it means, but my web browser doesnt work. I can connect to my wireless internet fine with the computer i am using now, and the computer i am trying to fix can connect as well. it appears as though the problem is with the web browser itself (or the computer for that matter). none of my other programs can connect to the internet either. is this something i can fix? i'm not sure how i got on the internet to get malwarebytes in the first place because after scanning it no longer works.
