ATi vs nvidia

is the 4870 comparable with the gtx260 so far as performance goes? I looked on gpureview, but i know that they don't scale in too many factors and put a sort of flat base on everything so every card in the series seems to be the exact same to them

yes it is, they are competing cards, although the 4870 slightly outperforms the GTX 260.

lmao outstanding, ty. I can get a 4870 cheaper than a 260 :P

When my sister FINALLY decides she wants me to build her new system for her I may end up just giving her mine and building another cheapish one only on AMD and ATi rather than intel and nvidia. I can get a hell of alot better for a hell of alot cheaper

yup, i can get a 4870 for just under 100 quid, the 260 is 121
Yup, and people try to compare 4870's to GTS250/9800gtx because of the price hehe, the 4870 is the best bang for the buck card out there right now. Although i would suggest trying to grab a 1GB model.

the 1gb ones are still cheaper than the 512, but not that much cheaper than an 896 gtx260

that is the cheapest 1gb 4870 compared to the cheapest 896 260

=EDIT=

I am not sure if this is a cock up or not, but if you do click the link to the 4870, get the picture with the packageing and what not up.

The card apparently has cuda technology and physx...in an ATi card

If you can field it, go with the one with the aftermarket cooler. The 48XX series is quite toasty under load, so any extra cooling helps, especially for overclocking. If not, go with the more standard model and you'll have a hot card that you'll love anyway haha.

On a totally unrelated side note, congratulations on mod Bomberboysk! Seems pretty appropriate to me, you're one of the most reliable people on this forum, its an honestly earned position.

I haev an AC accelero S1 rev2, the one which fits on the 48 series cards aswell as lower cards andi have a modded case with 120mm fan blowing directly onto the heatsink, so if it does get a bit hot, i can always slap that onto it

It really depends on the game... According to all the review sites I've read on these two, the GTX260 c216 outperforms (albeit only slightly) the 4870 in the majority of newer games, especially with high AA and AF and higher resolutions...
As far as the GTX260 costing more, remember, you're paying for the same amount of speed as the 4870, the rest of your money is paying for better drivers... Nvidia has always had great driversets for the last few generations, while ATI has had horrible drivers for the last few.
All that being said, you can't go wrong with either card! Both are fast, but they're both fast in different ways... different strengths and weaknesses.
