Decent Hard Drive Size For Gaming

For just installing games a 250GB to 320GB would be more then plenty depending on what kind and how many games but seeing how the price doesn't go up to much from say a 320GB to a 500GB is only like an extra $5-$10 newegg has a 1TB western digital on sale for $75 free shipping.

might as well go with 500GB or even 1TB as mentioned above. there's no reason to go any lower, unless of course you're looking for high speed performance (10,000 RPM, solid-state). but standard 7200 RPM is more than enough.

I used a 120GB for everything up until it failed (couple weeks ago) and it was more than big enough. As fatback said, 500GB drives are really cheap though so you might as well go with one.

well lets put it this way, I have Farcry 2 and it says it needs 12gb space. So how many games as large as Farcry 2 are you going to have installed? A 200gb hard drive would be more then enough for a handful of large games and a handful of medium size games with a decent amount of room left for other misc large files. 300-500gb is plenty. You could get away with 100-150gb hard drive and just uninstall the games you dont use anymore.

The price deference between 250gb-500GB its better to go 500GB. I mean for $8 more you can get 250GB more space....that is a great deal. Plus if you install music+games+porn you can max out a 250GB drive.

If your a seagate fan check out my HDD in my sig. Its the new .12 drives and it was $56.99 on Newegg.

It doubled my old 320GB .10 drive in burst AND transfer speeds its also on 1 platter which IMO makes it faster and also less things to fail you.

A 320 gigabyte hard drive should be enough space. I have a 232 gigabyte hard drive and I haven't even filled it to half capacity
yet. If I were to buy a hard drive I would buy this 320 gigabyte hard drive:

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAKS 320 Gigabyte Hard Drive - $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136074

For $53-60 he can get a 500GB....very minimal amount for double the room. You would be insane not to buy a 500GB at that price.

Call me foolish if you would like but I look at reliability and a lot of good feedback from other buyers on hard drives when buying. Reliability is my number one selling point. I hate dealing with failed hard drives.

Hey, just a reminder: games that say they need 12gb of space really only use 4-6gb. I found this out with far cry 2 and crysis. They really only use about 5gb on your drive, the rest of the space is recommended for save files and virtual memory. Hell, my 80gb WD drive has every game i want on it.

$10 is $10, I'd have a hard time buying the WD Black.

The thing with buyer feed back is you tend to get 1 of 2 extremes. The rare angry ones who had a drive DOA or fail quickly or people who really like it. You don't usually get the people who just buy a drive at a good price. I don't think that the 500GB drives are any less reliable than the 320GB ones. Especially if they are the from the same lineup (ie 7200.12)

A 500gb hard is more than you'll ever need for games, matter of fact the hard drive shouldnt be your main concern when it comes to gaming. Processor performance and the amount of RAM should be at the top of your list

I do gaming and i use a 1TB thats all you need tbh :) Even a 500GB would do even a 250GB haha depends how hardcore you are on your games tbh

Shh, I dont think porn's kosher to talk about :P

On topic: I ran out of space on my 160GB IDE drive so I split up a 500GB SATA drive for Windows and have 200GB for my OS/games, it depends very much on the person and if it's a dedicated drive for your OS/programs/games or also for whatever else you want to store on your system

Grand Theft Auto IV states 16GB required and 18GB recommended, and used about 14GB for me, that's fairly spot on all things considered

Actually hard drive speed is a fairly decent factor, my 500GB IDE does about 60MB/s read average and my 500GB SATA does around 95MB/s read average, the SATA one is much faster than my 160GB IDE which is about 60MB/s read average and pretty much everything is faster, HDD speed is very often overlooked if the capacity is sufficient. And RAM's a non issue considering a 4GB kit is ~50-60$ USD and more than that needs a 64 bit OS..
