Xbox 360 overheating

Yesterday me and my friend were playing on my Xbox 360. We played halo3 on co op, versed, etc then the Xbox randomly shutted off. This wasn't the power because my monitor said "no signal". I turned it on again and we played it for another 20 mins or so when the problem repeated. After about 30 mins i got the rrod and I immediately shut it off to let it cool down. That night we watched a movie on it and it was fine and has still been working today.

So my question is what should I do to keep it cooler? Is it possible to buy a cooler that you would use for a computer and put it in my 360? I've considered buying an external cooler from JB Hifi but they dont look very promising.
What should I do?

Yes my warranty is still valid but I dont want to have to wait two weeks for them to fix it and don't want a refurbished one.

Thx for all your help & responses

Alot of people these days open it up and re-apply some decent thermal paste but that would probably void warrenty

Id go and buy that external cooler you talk about,If that doesnt fix the problem then i would send it back simple as.

Do you know what version you have? I just recently got an Arcade (probably a Jasper) but it's TREMENDOUSLY cooler and more quiet than any of my friend's units. I guess what I'm really getting at is if you have a new unit (as in under a year) it really should be one of the better ones. Any problems you're having are probably flaws you should have checked out by MS.

If this isn't the case or can't be done, as others have said, there are after market coolers and such. Though I'd be sure you've got it in an optimal position. If you have it in a cubby, try moving it more into the open. It's it's on it's side, try laying it down(or vise versa).

see the thing is the fans arent what causes most the overheat, its the poor design of the case itself.

not just that, MS skimped on the thermal paste they used, on the heatsinks they used and on leaveing the memory without cooling.

If they had decent thermal paste, heatsinks and fans, the case design wouldn't be an issue

this is where you are wrong, see the case design if u open it and pull the motherboard up. you will see how the metal is etched, and bumps in different places, well in turn its kind of to replace standoffs, well when the 360 overheats, the board flexes and shorts it self on the metal. causing an rrod, thats why when most people do xclamp fix, they also use plastic, washers underneith the board

That's what I did and it worked for me.

i se

I am not fully wrong though, if they had made the cooling system something decent, it wouldnt overheat and warp :p

Either way, micrsoft are cheap sob's

So are most of these problems fixed with the newer versions? I have been thinking about getting an Elite b/c of the price drop. I just cant see myself spending $300+ on a machine thats going to give problems throughout its whole life.

i have the pro and haven't had any issues with it, i think it depends really on where you keep it and how it is treated, but also on luck.

I mean, there are people that have crap sat on top of it, stuff all around it all of the time, and obviously that will restrict airflow and make it hotter and make it more likely to die, but then there are people that keep it fully ventilated, never move it etc etc and it still goes because of age or because they just got a dodgy one.

If it does have a problem though it has a couple of years warranty so it shouldn't really go pop, and if it does it won't be too much of a problem because MS will sort it for you

well they did update cooling as far as newer system they put better heatsinks on them, but still nothing is a guarantee cuz they just keep adding better cooling, since re designing the case would be to much work. Just remember the new elites do not come with hdmi cables, or component any more. MS dropped the price but now u have to buy hdmi or components seperate, it only comes with your basic red, white, yellow.

also i have an arcade i bought almost 2 years ago never had an rrod but its on a shelf where it has plenty of venitilation

that is the same layout as mine, it has a wii next to it, but it doesn't affect the vents, too far away. I got rrod once though, but it was because the power cable wasn't in properly from when i moved it to put the internet cable in (i have fogot the name for it 0.o) so it thought the brick was screwed. Pushing it in properly fixed the problem though :D
