What would this sound from my computer possibly mean?

My "Desk Top" machine just made a very loud & high pitched sound,, much like a giant mosquito. My wife said she's heard it do it before but never remembered to till me............ it happened two or three times inside a minute from maybe 5-15 each time.

Don't tell me it's likely the hard drive going bad,,, I don't need this to happen right now!

Sounds like a CPU overheating bios alarm or maybe a wire caught in a fan or a fan going bad. Really depends on what exactly it sounds like.

Have you added anything new to your pc recently? Sometimes power supplies and graphics cards can exhibit coil whine.

Another possibility is a bearing inside a fan, optical drive, or hard drive.

keep the computers side panel open so next time it happens you can quickly look inside and point out the location of the noise.

Ok, It's been a while so I thought I'd post. This problem was apparently the Power Supply,,,,,,,,,,,, the fan on the power supply stopped the other day,,, I noticed it when I walked into the room with the computer and there was a very strong smell of electrical wires burning,,,,,,,,,, I realized there was NO sound coming from the 350W Power Supplies' fan and turned the PC off right away,,,,,,,,,,, it was working at the time. I ordered a new 485W Power Supply from Newegg, put it in and started the machine back up, so far so good,,,,,,,,,,, it seems to be working fine.
