Clean Hard Drive???

Hello everyone! My name is Vanessa, and I have a question for you gurus. I browse on my work computer to some sites my company doesn't allow (ex.-aol, walmart, etc.) I'm getting a new computer next week and they check them once you turn the old one in. I'm wondering if I delete my browsing history is that good enough? Will my cpu/hard drive store it somewhere that I don't know about that my company can find? I don't want to get in trouble. What can I do to make sure it is clean before I give it back? Thank you for any suggestions!!!!! Vanessa

Well most companies run Servers, and everytime you browse somewhere the tracks and history and logs of where you have been will in actual fact be saved on their Server !!

So therefore do not do this again, unless you are happy to be fired one day
Personal browsing on the Web should always be done at home (on your home computer)

For the moment just run CCleaner, although there are many many places where your tracks; logs; temp files; History; registry entries; pagefile; etc etc etc are, and the easiest option is to format the drive they should be happy with that, ie they don't need your personal stuff ;)

Kimsland, thank you for your quick reply! I'm a biologist out in a rural office by myself. I have sattellite intenet service. Would I be on a server? I know at the main office where all the supervisors are, those computers are on a server. I work for a governmental agency. I'm even more worried about it sitting inside my processor somewhere even though I delete my browsing history everyday. Don't want them to find this stuff. What do you think? Vanessa

I work for a governmental agency.
I think its even more likely that you are connected to their Server
I understand looking at shopping sites really is not a sackable offense (this could be argued though)
If you had been viewing porn or downloading cr@cks or visiting illegal sites, then this could be instant dismissal. If you have, then I would definitely format before returning it ;)

Why would you think that? Wouldn't they have caught it by now if it was? How do I format it? I'm 55 and not real good with this type of thing. Would formatting the hard drive affect any of the programs that I use for work? Thank you for the great advice!!!! Vanessa

Formatting will erase evrything off the drive including Windows and programs
To format your computer you could just use any Windows OS Disc, but there are many free ones out there, including Gparted live BootCd

Again "shopping online" probably isn't that bad anyway

Hmmmm. If it erases everything, that's not an option. So my best option is ccleaner? What are the chances this will get it done? So you're saying it's on the server, and in my cpu? I still don't know how I could be on the server when I'm not in the main office, don't think I'm inter-connected with the main offices computer system.

Usually government organizations run their own personal ISP Server
Is it possible that your Internet Service Provider is them?

Anyway I like CCleaner, but it doesn't get half of everything (probably not even a quarter) But it does get rid of the basic first look areas; they would need to be determined to start looking through all your logs and filesystem.
Other than shopping sites are there any other places you visit? ;)

No. My internet provider is Hughes Net (private company) from a different town. I voucher my bills to them every month, so does that mean I'm not on the Governmental server? Will ccleaner affect my work programs/files? No. Just want this crap off there to be safe.

CCleaner is perfectly safe
And if you use your own ISP then they may not be even interested in "Internet" usage, and mainly only interested in you work and data reports
If you have done your job properly and viewed a few "shopping" sites online, and now about to run CCleaner (of which I run everyday) Then I cannot see any issue.

I understand, but they check the processor when you turn it in so that's what I'm concerned with. It's against policy to use a gov. computer for anything but gov. work. Stupid me!!! Hoping ccleaner will get most of it off when they check it.

They check your Hard Drive (some users mistakinly call it CPU) for illegal or inappropriate stuff, and then probably wipe it themselves.
If you haven't anything like this on your Hard Drive, then no need to worry

Nope. Just aol, and walmart. So no 100% chance to get these off with ccleaner? Guess I'll hope they don't discipline me.

You can un-install AOL in Control Panel > Programs (or Add/Remove Programs)

I didn't download it, just check my home e-mails, and browse it some. I haven't downloaded anything. Just browse aol, and walmart sites. There shouldn't be anything to uninstall - correct???

Hmm, AOL must have come with the laptop...
I still say uninstall it :D (before returning the laptop)

See, that tells you what I know. It did not come with the computer when I got it, but don't remember downloading it. Am I that old, and dumb? You're saying it had to be downloaded by somebody???

Well I don't believe you are too dumb
As you have registered on a computer tech forum and posting

Hey, are you on your work laptop at the moment? Don't answer that. Because if you aren't then it's irrelevant, and if you are, then that's rediculous.

After reading through what you have said, I'd be more concerned about if you mistakingly allowed access or shared your files on the Internet
The government organization you work for should have a policy on Internet usage and what is and what isn't allowed.
Please locate that form and read it

I don't have a gov. laptop. I have a desktop that stays in my office. I'm at home now using my personal computer now. LOL

Please don't do personal online shopping or any pursonal Web usuage at work any more
You have possibly forgotten how much work was involved getting the position and learning the work, and I'm sure you have seen others come and go
Work is for work. Unless the Manager has allowed free Internet viewing on Coffee breaks or something (of which I doubt)

So is there anything else I can help you with today? ;)
