goats love RAM....and so do I

I like RAM, lots of it! But right now all I have is 3GB.

I would love more! How on earth can I do this? I've heard about the odd 3GB RAM limit, but some people have said that I could have 4GB in a computer like mine. So what is it, 3 or 4 as the limit???

My System:
2008 Dell 1520 Laptop
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz
3GB DDR2 SDRAM 670MHz
Samsung 226GB HDD
nVIDIA 8600m GT GPU (from Dell, so yeah....)
DVD+-RW
1280x800 matte finish screen
Windows XP-SP3 (32-bit?)

What can I do to add more RAM and speed this machine up even more. Given, it already runs really fast. But I want to know how to make it faster,

Do I add a 64-bit OS alone? Do I need a different prcessor (as if I could find one), Would it be better to just build another computer?

Do i need just one of those changes or a mixture of them?

You tell me. I dont really know the answer to these questions, and I would love to learn. Because one of these days I'm going to build a NICE desktop for work and gaming.

RAM, its the best

So conceivably I could add one more GB of RAM, though most of it will go unused. But with RAM so cheap why not add it?

What would it involve to use windows 7 64-bit? I bet I could put that on this computer. Or would I need a different CPU, as Ive heard that 64-bit OS's need a 64-bit processor. True or not?

Yes, they do. But any processor these days is 64-bit. that means every core 2 duo, including mobile ones, which you have. If you aren't sure, check in CPU-Z

Max ram - 32bit: about 3.25gb
64bit: essentially unlimited

it is essentially unlimited if you don't get the standard version of windows, if you get home premium, ultimate, whatever, then it is virtually unlimited :P 8GB on standard, 124 (i think off the top of my head) on the others.

true, but every processor from the later p4 (again, i think, tiredness sucks for recall) and the AMD athlon 64 is 64 bit. All c2d, even conroe, are 64 bit CPUs

No point in getting another gig, your lappy probably hold 4 max, wont make much of a difference, 3gigs is quite a bit, more than i have n my gaming rig, so you should be fine, waste of money imo.

Ram

So it wont be of any use till I get a 64-bit OS. Just the same, I will probably just buy the ram now before its too hard to find.

Ive seen gaming ram, but I cant tell any "on paper" difference between the normal ram and the gaming type. Maybe the gaming ram operates better for some things?

I dont really care how much it costs, as long as its reliiable. I mean how often will I ever buy ram. Its kind of a one time thing for most computers.

Also, is 2GB the max per stick for laptops? Ive looked some and thats all Ive seen as the max.

The limitation is with the OS and not the computer.

The system as a whole will use up to 4Gigs of RAM with a 32bit OS,
but the amount available for the OS will be limited.

Your computer will still use all of the RAM.

ram

I dont know about the drivers, and I wonder about a BIOS version that will take a 64-bit OS. I dont know if I can do the 64 upgrade, but I'm going to try.

But I wont be trying it till next year, First I want to see just how "great" W7 really is. I wonder if it will live up to all the hype, or if it will be like another Vista, gag.

So, Bodaggit23 your saying that my games, programs will be able to use all the way up to four GB? (minus whatever the OS uses).
