Im trying to fix my buddies compaq but he dosent have the cd anymore can I download vista anywhere the computer has the reg key on the case so im not trying to pirate anything.

What kind of computer, and did your friend purchase Vista retail or did it come with a restore disc?
It is illegal to download any version of Windows unless it's straight from Microsoft or a participating partner.

Oh, I just worked out I read that incorrectly
I thought the OP was saying they didn't have a CD Drive
You can contact HP here:
They will re-supply you with a new Vista Restore disc (by confirming your S/N came with OEM Software)
If your computer did not come with OEM Software, then you can chat with MS here: http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx They will then supply you with a new disc
Note: There will likely be a reduced cost involved, but the chat sessions are free

Yes like mentioned contact Hp....ask them for a new system restore disk as you have lost yours....it shouldnt cost much.
Before you do that,check if they put a System restore partition on the drive,you may not actualy need the disk as some companys put it on the hard drive and you can restore windows from that.
They did with my HP anyway.
