Data Recovery?

I have a Dell XPS 400 w/a dead motherboard. I plan on building me a new computer and want to transfer my music, pictures and files from the hard drives on the Dell to the new system. The drives on the Dell are "striped". I was told by a computer shop that I will not be able hook them up to the new motherboard because it has to be a Dell motherboard/processor? Is this true or is there another way around ths?

I don't know what that guy is talking about what kind of hard drive is it a seagate, western digital, samsung, etc. I think what he might have meant is that the OS that is on the hard drive will not work. You shouldn't have a problem hooking the hard drive to your new system and moving your files over or just leave them where they are.

With RAID 0, I'm quite sure you can't "rebuild" the raid unless you have the same system. You'd either need to pull the RAID controller from the old computer (if removable) or find a computer with the same controller.

No, he actually meant to say just that...he even gave me a brochure for some company to do the recovery for about $2K! It is a raid drive!

Ahhhhh...yes I think you are on to something! How do I know if the raid chip is removable and where is it located/what does it look like?

Yeah... data recovery isn't cheap...

And the RAID controller is removable, it'll be a dedicated PCI card. I kind of doubt it will be though.

For the XPS 400... AFAIK its actually soldered onto to the board. With raid 0, the moment you make a mistake, all of your data would be lost. You got it hard man... :(
