Need CPU Guide

Hi,

I am trying to figure out what to buy, a laptop or a Desktop.
Can someone help me sort out a list top 5 cpus or laptops or desktops and some sort of performance comparison?

I am guessing that the i5/i7 core are the best, followed by quad core, then core 2 duo? But there are so many models within each.

Ideally I want a desktop replacement laptop but only if it is future proof and has the latest CPU, otherwise I may just buy a powerful desktop and a decent laptop to go with it.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks!

Hi,

I am trying to figure out what to buy, a laptop or a Desktop.
Laptops are made for mobility, if you feel that you always be in the same place when you are on your computer (ie at your computer desk) then stay with a Desktop

By the way, seeming you have the money to possibly buy both! Please wait 1 Month for Windows 7 to be released before purchasing a laptop or whatever computer
If you buy one right now you will get Vista with a free Upgrade to Windows 7 ("Upgrade" Windows disc ? ooo yuk, I only like full versions ;))

Depends on budget, My list would be - i7 920/ i7 860 > i5 750 > Phenom II x3 720 > Athlon x4 620 > Athlon x2 240/ 245

If you buy a laptop (notebook) as your primary computer know that you are really compromising processing power for portability. I would do as you suggested in your post, buy a powerful desktop and a decent laptop to go with it.

Are you planning to buy the components and assembling the desktop system yourself or are you planning on buying a pre-built?

Going to get it built for me. But i want to understand all the components quite well so I can choose all the right ones as usually they try to cut corners somewhere or another.
Yeah looks like you do end up sacrificing a lot of the power for the portability and still end up paying more.
I think im going to go for a i7 chip on a desktop, and look at getting a laptop later depending on exactly what i am going to do with it.

I would have whoever is building a desktop computer for you build with one of the following brands of motherboards:

Gigabyte
Asus
MSI
