Is yours a Retail disc or did it come with a computer?

A Retail disc will work for a repair, as long as it's the same version. ie: XP Professional, or XP Home

My disc came with my computer when I bought it, does that mean it won't work? How am I supposed to fix this then?

It won't work. The disc that came with your computer is tailored for your hardware.

You'll need a Retail disc.

Thank you for your help, it is very much appreciated,

I have a laptop that won't even start to boot up windows, it says

"Windows could not start up because the following file is missing or corrupt

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll

Replace this file"

How do I boot the computer to get access to my hard drive to do this?

I tried booting in dos, and I tried booting with a windows 98 cd, both come up to the prompt but won't let me access my hard drive, I'm assuming they don't have the correct drivers?

Any suggestions on a cd or software I can get to do this? Or a download to do this?

Its a compaq v3000 notebook, is buying a retail xp version my only hope?
