if I have a PowerPC G5 (pre Intel) can I put a new motherboard in to convert it to Intel? Trying not to drop another $5K getting a Mac Pro.

lol, if you drop 5k on a mac pro ur automatically a retard. you can build a pc that is way better for less then 2k, like an i7 build.

You are calling someone a retard when you can't even properly use the English language? Pot calling the kettle black on this one. Secondly, you cannot build a machine cheaper than a Mac Pro because Xeons != i7s. They have some big differences which is why Intel still sells both processors.

Now to answer the OP's question. No, you can't build a Mac as in you can't buy motherboards for them. They also work on what is called a TPM, so really only their hardware is supported.

If you wish to venture down the "hackintosh" path you should google Project OS X x86, and you will find your answers there.

Why would you need a Mac Pro in the 5k range? I mean they start at 2500 for a single processor and like just over 3k for dual processors. What are you doing on your Mac that requires that much power?

I think the OP was just stating, they'd rather replace the board than throw down on a new Mac Pro. They just got the price wrong.

So, no, you can't just replace the board on your G5.

Most consumers don't need a Mac Pro.(nor would they be able to flex it's muscles)
