"Connected" Sure doesn't seem like it.

I've been having a very frustration debacle that I can't seem to figure out, albeit I'm not a genius. I know my way around computers fairly well, but I'm no master.

Anyway, here we go. I have a wireless DSL connection in my home. And it worked flawlessly up until about a few weeks ago, where this computer will "connect," but I don't receive any packets, and my internet doesn't actually work. Now you would assume this would just be a problem with the ISP or the router, but what's very strange is that the other computers in the house will work without a problem.

SOMETIMES this computer will connect, and I'll be able to navigate pages... But more often then not, it will say it's connected, with great reception, but I can't navigate or use the internet in anyway. It's really thrown me for a loop, and I don't know where to even start. Have a few laptops that work just fine with it, and a mac that i've had no problem with. It's only this computer.

And as I said, it will say that it's connected, yet I won't be able to actually go to web pages, download, log in to anything internet based. BAH! It's frustrating, I need to get a lot of things done, and this machine is the best one I have.

I'm running XP by the way. If you need anymore info, just ask. I really hope one of you can help me figure this out!

It could be your network card or the drivers. Try reinstalling the network card drivers or updating them.

O man! I had this same problem in college. It was a bummer. I skipped class to play Unreal Tour or Diablo2 and NO INTERNET! What I did to fix it was pretty much reinstall the whole thing plus change the main computer that the router was hooked to. I don't know how or why it got fixed. =( But, I got back to skipping class and pwning =D

Well I reformatted two days ago, just to clean out all the massive amount of crap I had on here, and didn't feel like going through and deleting everyting manually(yes I'm lazy, I do it about once a year). But It did it before that, and still does it :(

Do you have a 2 in 1 modem and router or are they 2 seperate devices? Maybe the computer is connecting to the router but not getting through to the modem. Check your network properties and see if you can repair the connection.

They are one in the same. It's actually been working for the last 4 hours or so, which is very very rare. I don't think it's fixed, because it HAS done this. I just need to find the root cause =/

I have a wireless DSL connection in my home.
What happens when you connect directly to the router via ethernet cable?
I'm thinking the wireless hardware in your laptop (or the plugged in wireless Dongle) must be faulty

As you have now done a clean install obviously Malware is ruled out
but what Antivirus did you install? And did you try connecting before putting on any 3rd party Internet Security software?

Another point is have you completed all Windows Security Updates and Service Packs?
Have you updated all your computers manufacturers drivers, from the manufacture support site?
