I don't have the my OS disk anymore

You really need your Windows disc
But you can download > Recovery Console Boot Disc for XP
You can then create the boot disc, and boot from it
In the Recovery Colsole, you can run chkdsk *: /r (note: "*" denotes all drives)

It may just need a CheckDisk performed
