I don't believe the free edition Avast has a firewall so you will be using the Windows one (unless you run a 3rd party one).

You have opted to run IE8

I would not turn off updates as these provide fixes for "security holes" in the browser and fixes in the OS itself. Better to fix it at source than to rely on software to protect those security holes due to programming cockups.

It is not advised to turn off Windows Automatic Updates
By the way the only way to do this properly is in Start > Run > Services.msc

BUT.

It is true that installing all the Windows Security Updates plus Service Packs, plus Java (the forgotten security hole) Can slow down the very old slow systems (say 1.2GHz ~ 512Meg of Ram)

Therefore if your system is not that low in system specs, then leave it on
On the otherhand if you do turn it off, then you should be prepared for system hacks, which is the main intention of these MS Security Updates - to fix holes in Windows (and also provide additions and improvements to Windows)

XP, is still allowing Security Updates from MS (note: MS were going to stop this all together, and they have confirmed that they will keep it until 2012 I think)
Windows 7 (the new Windows OS) is set to be even more secure than XP (better firewall etc) So you may want to advise the User you are helping to update, hardware and Operating System


I think the support reply you received from that member (on the other thread) was trying to help. BUT he should have advised you more thoroughly ;)
