Security software

hi. My PC is currently running Windows Vista. However I plan to do a format and install XP once again because I think it will be faster with XP and better for games. I thought of buying Windows 7 however I don't think it's worthed and anyway I get it for free if in the future I purchase a new computer.

what I like in Vista is that the security against spam, malware and viruses seems to be better than in XP. I plan to install Avast antivirus but I would like you to give me suggestions on what to install to keep it clean (preferably free software).

Thanks

Avast is ok, but I prefer free Avira: http://www.free-av.com/
Free Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
Updated Hosts file: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

That will do it ;)

One Question: If I access the update from the Windows will it automatically install the service packs?
Thanks for your help. I will surely try the av you suggested and the Malwarebytes which as I undrestood scan for and removes stuff.

Yes, Windows will update itself to the newest Service Pack, but it will be horribly slow to update that way, depending on the version of XP you get.

If you get a version of XP with Service Pack 3 already installed, you'll have no problems.

I have a windows XP with service pack 2 installed so can you tell me from where I can download service pack 3 (preferable somewhere official)?

Thanks

Ok so I formated and installed Avira as you suggested. Seems to be good however it seems to have a problem updating. It updated when I installed it but now there seems to be a problem. Is this normal?
