Heat problem

Hi I have a Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB card and the temperatures are up to 80C(176F) according to Everest and Speedfan, that is when the system is idle and I'm wondering if those temperatures are ok?
It seems a bit high and games that I feel that I should be able to play can get an FPS down to 16.
According to Everest my GPU fan is at 63% so the system does not see that as overheat?

Anything I can do about this or is this normal for this card?

Thanks

The 8800´s are notorius for heat. You can change the heat-sink for an after market one.

Other than that a well placed fan can go a long way , also check the airflow in your case.

I was actually looking at that earlier today and considering of buying it but my problem is that I hardly know anything about hardware so I wouldn't know what to do with it. I guess I'll have to pay someone to do it for me

I tried with an open case to see if that lowered the heat I think it did a little maybe 5C which isn't that much

Swapping the fan on my old 6800GT was a bit involved, but the fan on my 9800GT looks pretty simplified. You shouldn't have to do much more than remove a few screws (only 4 I think on the 9800s) clean up the board/chips, apply some thermal past, thenscrew on the new cooler.

Though you really shouldn't be having too many problems with the stock cooler if you're not overclocked or anything. How are the other temps inside your case? Maybe you could use some more intake/exhaust fans?

I watched a video on changing fans on the 8800 on youtube and it looked like a real pain.. I might just buy a new card instead!

The other temperatures are 37-50C(100-120F) it's just the GPU that is 80C

After a lot of reading and checking I learned that my fan speed was at around 60% when the temperature is at 80C so I decided to increase it to 100% and the temperature is at 70C right now and declining.

I'm wondering if I am damaging the fan in some way when I have it at 100% at all times

I was actually about to suggest running the fan at a higher speed. Fans normally do last longer at lower speeds, less wear and tear, but it shouldn't change it's longevity that much...

Perhaps just put it at 85% for now. A temporary non-tech trick for now- cool your room down. I thought I had insufficient cooling until I moved my computer to a colder room, Just a thought. Also make sure the rest of your system is vented well - I have an 8800GTX 768mb with a fan at 60% and it runs idle at 55-60 degrees, but the room is reasonably cool and I also have a large CPU fan and sufficient case fans.
