i just read a review and so far windows 7 is about the same as vista performance wise
and so im wondering .. wth is so much better about windows 7?

the selling point for me will be if the windows sidebar uses less ram to run lol

Personally, I find reviews are best taken lightly. I've used Windows 7 RC as well as have Vista installed on my multi-boot pc. Windows 7 seems pretty good but Vista has always run pretty decently for me as well. If I had spent a lot of money for Windows 7 expecting the sort of difference between Vista and Win7 that we saw with Win98 and XP, I'd have been very disappointed. I don't think it's there. Win7 is an improvement but it's not ground breaking.

Vista and Win7 both run well on reasonably up to date machine. My advice is to grab the RC while it's still available and compare both OS's.

You're sold then, because Windows 7 doesn't have a Sidebar.

Windows 7 is much lighter than Vista and will run on lower spec hardware than Vista will. Netbooks for example.

The performance gain can really only be seen on the lower spec hardware. Vista ran good on better hardware anyway, so the difference is much less noticable. But, even with that I'd still say 7 is a nice upgrade from Vista; The built in applications are finally useful now (paint, cd burner etc.), the taskbar is much improved, some missing animations have been put in, gadgets have been revised for the better, jumplists are handy, aero peek is handy, show desktop button is more useful, media center has been overhauled visually, wireless networking is much improved (Vista used to take FOREVER to open the available connections after bootup). Personalization menu has been cleaned up, graphics properties gets its own menu option on right click, thumbnails in explorer work much better. Wow, kinda just blurted that all out, but that's a start on the things I like about it anyway

Windows 7 is good if you get it for cheap, or better yet free!

It's nothing special and anyone expecting to see some huge, groundbreaking difference is going to be sorely disappointed.

Marketing is a powerful bitch!

thanks guy i didnt realize 7 didnt have the side bar its on my roomates computer i put it on there i cant stand teh tasbar though xD
sorry for sping keyboard cutting in ad out

I just installed W7 the other night, I've only been using it a day or so now, but so far it's already better than Vista, by far! Despite it taking me a while to find 64bit drivers for my Wireless, it's so much better!

EDIT: Just noticed my RAM usage. It's only using 970mb at idle, where as Vista would probably be using about 1.2Gb at idle. Oh, and I have some gadgets on my desktop, so it's pretty good!

Haha, I know, right.

You know if drivers work in Vista, they should work in W7. Or are you on about X64 drivers?

Yup the x64 drivers...but the thing is,even in vista they played up.....it was fine in Xp.

It just seems that ever since vista came out Creative has got lousy with drivers...thats what its been like for me anyway.

and Punkbuster...doesnt like to run right in FC2 multiplayer and kicks me.

your selling point is correct with 7 and 7 is way more stable as of right now which is really good considering how new it is. my buddy is running it perfectly one a netbook so I would go with 7

More stable than what? I've never had any issues with Vista on any of the 3 machines I've ran it on.

I'll assume you're not replying to my question, as that article says nothing about stability.

Windows 7 narrowly outperformed Vista, overall, in that article, but it hardly blew the doors off.

Nope, wasn't replying to your question. Some folks had a "feeling" one OS or the other was better. The link was just to put a few numbers to a few different tests. Thought they may be interested in the tests.

Didn't I read in the link that Vista actually outperformed Win7 under a scenario or two....

Precisely.
