Bad Voodoo

Hello, I'm very newb to this whole putting your comp together thing and did my first build and first OC.. My question is when running prime 95 my CPU temps hovered about 91-93c, is this bad or within limits when stress testing?

I clocked it to 3.90

I7 920
P62 del
6 GB Ram
V10 cooler

Thanks

Arctic silver? Thats one of the best. How much did you put on?

I placed a few puddles then evenly spread on chip with a card.. very thin film.. My room temp is about 85 degrees F.. Im in AZ and 85 degrees is nice compared to 100+ so have AC off and windows open.. Wonder how much that is effecting it? i did remove a side panel and it drop a few degrees not much...

I would back your overclock down to 3.6 or so. Whats your temps at that setting?

What voltage is your CPU at? Is your fan on your CPU cooler at max? What are your case temps like?

Few puddles? How big? I use about 2 of the size of an uncooked grain of rice, and spread it with a razor blade ultra thin. In fact, only using that much forces you to spread it that thin to get the whole chip covered.

To put things into perspective for you, 91c is 195 degrees fahrenheit.

Yes, I have back it down to stok to run to see how it handles.. But it is warm in here and wont run it until tonight.

I had the voltage set at 1.20

My puddles were larger than yours , however did scoop up all the excess. Mine was also a very thin film.. i dont think its the paste..

I understand how hot it is..

Im not sure if my CPU fan is adjustable or I would have to look at see what the normal operating RPM are to determine the amount its working.

Do you have decent case ventilation?

Need to know your case temps then.

I dont have a way to tell u my case temps unless im overlooking something... I removed my side panel to cool it down... T

The system says my MB right now with me just runnign the internet and normal stuff is at 45c...

i got thermometer case temp is 90 f between Mb and PSU... Room temp is 93 F wow, stepped out of room and it dropped 10 degrees..Room is located on side that gets most sun...

Motherboard temp is what I was going for. Everyone just calls it case temp.

Yeah thats hot too, but apparently unavoidable unless you turn some A/C on. So really you have no choice but to turn down your overclock. What kind of temps does 3.6ghz give you? Honestly I wouldn't go over 80c. I would say get a better cooler but you pretty much have the best air cooler there is.
The best thing you can do now is to get better case ventilation. How many fans do you have? And what size are they? Your case temps are 20 degrees F more than ambient, so if you can drop the temps inside that would help. And also, if you have good enough ventilation leaving the side of your case on actually gives you lower MB temps. As a bandaid right now, if you went and got a large house fan or whatever and left the side of the case open and blew direct air in there to cool it that would work pretty well.

Ok, I have three fans on the case on they are 120 mm.. I going to put a house fan on it and see what that does...

Thanks for all the help but If putting the fan on it works it could just be the surrounding temps... I hope thats all it is and not hardware, removing the CPU cooler means taking the entire Mb out... not fun...

you have good case fans, an amazing cpu cooler, and 45C being your motherboard temps rules out your bedroom being the cause to make the processor that hot. id reapply the paste, but as thin as possible.

I guess if it is the paste that would be the least expensive thing to first look at.. I will take the cooler out and reapply...

Like I said, about 2 of the size of an uncooked grain of rice, and use a razor blade.

If you had to scrape excess off, it was too much to begin with.

Very interesting video demonstrating how thermal paste spreads, using different methods.

You'll see why I never use the "spread" method.

i just realised, you mentioned you had to scoop off the excess. how much exactly did you put on? hope you didnt get any on the processor pins!

When you apply the paste stick a pea sized amount on the centre of the CPU.

From the look of that video the cross method seems goos for any paste

that's too hot. if your not carefull your computer will overheat. maybe consider trying to move the computer to where the sun isn't facing. or maybe keep the case open but i wouldn't suggest it. do you have any spots where you can put another fan?

you have to make sure that you don't put too much and you don't get any on the pins. probobly only put a little bit on it. maybe like a pea sized shape like linkin93 said.
