Can't backup laptop's files?

My windows vista laptop won't boot. It gets to the windows loading screen, hangs, flashes a BSOD for literally half a second, and then restarts itself. I'm assuming something is wrong with my registry/windows files.

I planned on hooking up the laptop HD to my desktop and then copying and pasting the files from the laptop HD onto my Desktop HD. Afterwards, I would reinstalling windows. However, when i connect my laptop's HD to my desktop, it tells me that I have to format the disk.

Is there anyway that I can get into my HD without formatting it and losing the things I'm trying to backup in the first place?

Is the hard drive sata or IDE. you could try booting like bartpe or something and use file explorer to back up files. but it seems like your hdd might have gone bad, you also could try to download hirens boot cd, and run the hard drive repair tools and see what happens
