Windows XP hangs on shut down

Well, for work I've got a new laptop. because of all those industrial programs not working under Vista, it had to be downgraded to XP.

anyways, the laptop is now a month old, and its decided to not shut down anymore.
everytime when i shut down the computer, it hangs on the " windows is shutting down" screen.
I have to hold te power button to turn the pc off then.

the odd thing is, there isnt an error message or anything when i turn the laptop on the next time.
so i'm wondering, does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

Like said it could be a App., kinda odd it would not pop up a so and so is not shutting down. Have you updated any of the drivers? A driver can do the same thing.

I've looked into the event viewer, and whan I tried shutting the pc down yesterday, there are no errors at that time. (4:45pm)

I also havn't updated drivers. all I did instal was the Siemens S7 software and protool. but if one of those wouldn't shut down,it would give an error in the log, right?

It should, unless the program is prompting you to do something like "Would you like to Save before you Close" or something along those lines... I'm not sure that would appear as an error. Sometimes those windows get stuck behind other stuff.

I'd start removing software you believe could be the culprit, it doesn't sound like a Windows issue, to me at least.
