Guild Wars on dial-up?

on dial up, no, you will just get lots of lag and disconnection, if you upgraded to maybe even 1mb broadband it would handle it no problems at all and that is fairly cheap per month.

No offense but I busted up laughing when I read this thread title!

As mentioned, dial up is barely acceptable for basic internet functions let alone any form of demanding internet intensive action such as gaming.

Hopefully they offer dsl where you are!

It isn't really intensive until you are sat with 40 people at once, which happens alot in MMORPGs, especially in cities where there are thousands of people at once and you have to get a few kb/s from each of them telling you where they are and what they are doing

glad I could amuse you with my unfortunate situation...nothing but dial-up is available at my location...

can't you get one of those wireless dongles? Even they work at 512mb I think and work from your phone or from satelite, depends which you get, they aren't massively quick, but are faster than dial up

If you select quiet servers such as the Korean server then you may not suffer from large amounts of lag that you may get from 60 odd people being in a main area.

However a server in Korea is further than a server in your area (probably) so some lag may be evident but most likely less than in a busy server.

Finally when entering a new area (you may already know this) you download around 3 megs of data for that area so be prepared to wait quite a while when zoning.

Overall you should be able to play but prepared for team mates to complain when they have to wait for you to load the area and cope with your lag.

hope this helped

even an empty server won't help with lag when you are talking speeds this low, he won't be able to keep up with the packets needed to be sent/received

I understand how you would get to this conclusion as dial up is extremly slow in comparison to even the basic of broadband options.

HOWEVER if you read the technical section (near the middle of the whole page) http://www.guildwars.com/products/guildwars/features/default.php
you will see that GW was designed (partially) for those with dial
up.

If I were you I would buy the first GW see if it's any good connection wise.

Hopes this helps in your final decision

The makers of guild wars are a company like any other, trying to get as much money for as little effort in any way possible, that will have hugely increased their demographic and I would take it with a pinch of salt.

You send me a link to an independant site or source showing nobody has ever had problems, or atleast the vast majority have not, and I will believe you. Not saying you are wrong, I understand that it isn't only throughput that affects your ping and lag, but your overall speed does play a huge part in it and in this case because it is dial up, I would say the factor is too large, especially when in a city with thousands of other people, it would just grind to a halt

When I first got GW I can remember playing at my grandma's house, she at that time had dial up. I can remember waiting quite a while for an area to load and in a busy area yes there were a lot of people jumping around (down to large amounts of lag) however venturing off into an area with just NPC's as allies I didnt notice my guy jumping between places(like in the cities). His movement was quite fluid and battles were fairly stable (No enemy NPC suddenly jumping from one side to another when I would attack them:eek:)

Now Aastii i did find a link although its only a handful within their respected forum who replied to the initial thread.

I am almost 100% sure there will be other people who say GW didn't run very well over dial up.

So my final opinion is that you (infosponge) download the trial version (might take ages ) http://www.guildwars.com/support/gwtrial.php
Give it a go see if it works, then decide on buying it.

Hoped this helped Infosponge

hmm they seemed a little mixed:

must have been a hard question :)
i took the gamble bought it and played it fine with my 256mb of RAM and my
geForce fx 5500 256mb graphics card,
i got a RAM upgrade anyway, so itll run even smoother

so if any one else was wondering, if you have dial up...go buy the game
its worth it
:)

ya i agree i have dial up and it runs smoothly. the only down fall is that there are many people there that use teamspeak and ventrilo (team communications programs) and you can have them running at the same time or it creats lagg.

now, if it is anything like most other MMOs, end game stuff usually requires vent or TS to organise stuff, without it everything turns into a nightmare and 9 times out of 10, fails, so from that point not being able to use it, i aint too sure.

about what acexzy said bout communication programs, i have dail up and run ventrillo without a problem, but i cant run teamspeak, ya just gotta find the right communtication program

that would seem to cancel it out, but again, most of the time it isn't really your choice, you don't pay for it or make the big decision after all unless you are the big chees, which you probably won't be with dial up, not stable enough :P

I would think the only problem would be your dial-up causing game lag for other players. I havent played Guild Wars but our servers freak out when we get a couple dialers playing MOH with the rest of us.

seems people will get mighty pissed at you too.

I didn't know it had a trial version though like you said, I'd deffinately recommend giving that a try and seeing if it works, looks like you have 2 chances of it working, not anything to lose really (other than lots of time :P) by downloading the trial

Here's the deal with GW and dial-up (yes, I've played it on and off from the beginning over 4 years ago). When you are in a city, there will be pretty major problems with lag especially in the larger cities. However, when you head out to "quest" it will actually be fine since you are completely on your own (unless you want to party with someone), and your only real connection is between your own computer and the server. Furthermore, most of the interactive processes are on you own computer without the server anyway. Oh, and don't play on the Korea server, that will actually increase your lag problems even with the vastly fewer people on it.
