Any input? I know the Intel stuff is supposed to be cooler, more effiicient and faster overall... Is this all true??

I use the pc for web surfing, writing papers, and looking at pictures.

If I7 is the way to go, do I choose the 860 or 920 and why?

My old Pentium 4 could do those things - but a Dual Core today could handle all of those at once without a hiccup.

How much you want to spend - and are those the only things you will use your PC for? The i7 is a better CPU - for multitasking - and applications that require alot of CPU demand with multi-threading capability - but if you will only use your PC for the 3 stated functions - it'd be overkill in terms of cost / value.

If you would like some flexibility to grow into gaming / video editing / etc - More is better works for me. I built more PC than I needed - for my first build < listed below > but it allows me to try new things without worrying about getting bogged down. I run 2 Monitors with Video card - and game on my PC now . All of which I had never thought of doing before my build - and will probably tinker with some video editing with some videos I've recorded - but that's for a later date. Right now - that's still a foreign language for me.

I don't know your situation enough to pick a 955 - 965 or core i7 - but any of them would cover your stated needs with a ton of room to grow into.

I you use the pc for web surfing, writing papers, and looking at pictures, you don't need core i5/ i7/ PhenomII x4 955/965.

I would suggest go for cheap Phenom IIx3 720 with AthlonII x4 620, 4GB RAM with 4670 to cover any slight gaming. Probably around $700.

Well, I am looking to build a pc that will I can run for 7 years and be happy with it like my last HP PENTIUM 4, 2.8 g, 1 G ram setup.

Here is what I was going to order before thinking of switching to Intel:
