CD/DVD Not Working

A few months ago I put a spare HD on my computer here at work to store photos on.Now the CD/DVD doesn't work (I don't use it that much),it's got power and it spins, but it doesn't show up under My Computer.

This one guy said one had to be the master and the other a slave, but I don't know how to do that.

I seen these connectors in there,2 white ones on the spare HD and 1 green one on the CD Drive.
How do I arrange them to where it'll work? Or is that the problem?

OK,I did that and found out there is a diagram and they are called jumpers.

I got the spare hard drive disconnected for now and moved the jumper to cable select on the CD,turn the computer on and it said new CD Rom hardware found but it's not showing up under my computer.

I got them set just like on the diagram and still nothing.
And now the spare HD ain't even showing up.

Changed jumpers around and now got the HD to show, but the Cd still ain't doing nothing.
Could the drive or whatever it is be missing?

Do you have 2 ide channels? You should have hard drives on one channel and cdroms on the other. If you only have 1 ide channel or port then you need to put hard drive on the end of the cable and jumper it to master and then put the cdrom on the middle connector and jumper it slave. Depending on your case you may have to put the hdd up in the cdrom drive bays if you only have one IDE channel. What motherboard or computer do you have?

You never did answer my questions. Do you have 1 or 2 IDE channels/ports? If your motherboard supports sata then I would recommend getting a SATA hard drive and then leave the IDE for the cdroms.

I had to google what an IDE channels was and the best I can tell it has 2.It's an HP pavilion a604x

The HD ain't the problem,it's showing and I can open it,the CD ROM use to show up and work. All I did was plug the HD and it's not working now.I think I did switch the plug-ins so the HD would fit a bay area.

Does the bios recognize the drives? If the bios recognizes them then most likely you have a corrupt windows installation or corrupt registry.

Don't know what a Bios is.

Maybe the best thing to do is get an external CD RW,but it still might not work.

I use CCleaner, would that have deleted anything I need?
I also tried system restore and nothing changed.
I don't think it would.

Got this guy at work to try something and he tried everything he could think of,changing different CD ROMs,cables, drivers and nothing worked.Only hope that USB plug in kind will work.
