ALoha,
My son is a hard core gamer on Xbox and for Christmas he wants a updated gaming computer. But being a "Clueless Mom" about gaming computers, I was wondering if anyone was up for for some guidence. I was planning on buying one from ibuypower.com (Since they seemed more affordable). I would like to stay around $1000 including shipping. So if anyone out there could please, please help a clueless Mom out. I would appreciate it!

Mahola, Kam

Wait... are you asking for one of us to build it and ship it to Hawaii? You could always build it there. Here's a tutorial you could use: http://www.computerforum.com/104641-how-build-computer-step-step-photos.html

***EDIT***
What do you require? A new OS, keyboard, monitor, etc? Or just a new computer?

No, I want one built from ibuypower.com. Someone tell me what to buy from that site. When I go there it has so many options of add ons. I'm so confussed

I think she means compiling a list of hardware off ibuypower.com that would suite her son's gaming needs.

Here's the best I could come up with from that website, quite overpriced when you compare it to building your own computer.

Gamer Paladin D670

That doesn't include mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers etc. etc. just everything you need in the tower unit, and a case I'm sure he'd be quite impressed with.

That system would play anything thrown at it very nicely.

Only thing is it comes out a bit over your budget with P&P at $1,061, Gawd they stunt you on P&P. almost $100 for P&P, ridiculous.

Thank you so much Dazzeerr! I would be clueless building my own computer. So i've been looking online to have one built. I about fell over when I seen alienware.com. Does anyone have any other suggestion on where to have one built? ibuypower.com seemed the most reasonable but the shipping is a killer. My son already has a 22-Inch LCD Monitor, keyboard and mouse. Thank again for the help

i would also recommend building but newegg has some pretty good pre built computers on newegg that are from ibuypower and other companies. for your price range this one would be good
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227178
or you could get this one and get this video card and it will run any game super good for a while. its sold out right now because everyone wants one but if you check on newegg.com for them periodically, im sure you will find one. it will cost a bit over but it would definatley be worth and would make your son the happiest kid ever. just depends if you can afford to spend a little more. either computer would last him awhile (also it could count as two presents ;) )

CyberPowerPC is a good and cheap brand.

Depending on how much you know about putting things together, computers arent that hard to build barring the parts list, and we can help you with a list of parts. The way i put it to a friend was "Basically, you need a philips screwdriver and well....thats about it"
http://www.computerforum.com/104641-how-build-computer-step-step-photos.html

The thing with building is this, you get so many more better quality components for the same money. $1000 can get a very decent setup building yourself, if you use a site like ibuypower or cyberpower, take at least $100-200 just for labor, plus whatever inflated fee's they will charge on higher end components.

However, i recommend cyberpower over ibuypower due to costing a little bit less overall although again, i dont really recommend buying from an OEM.

I'll never understand the compulsion to coerce people to build a computer,
when it's clearly been stated they don't want to.

It's the kids birthday. She wants him to be able to open a box and use it.

Not spend hours on a computer forum trying to figure out what went wrong
with her first time build...

Thank you all for the advise!!
Bodaggit23 you understand that i'm an idiot when it comes to computers!! And yes I wanted my son to open a box and it be totally ready for hook up.
But after reading bomberboysk post and seeing the step by step pictures, I'm going to ask my son how he would feel about building it him self (with the help of someone) I think he would appreciate it more. Plus he"ll have alot more gifts to open!! I've just been clueless on the components to buy and where to buy them. Living in Hawaii all we have is a best buy. So my biggest fear is not getting the right stuff. But Thank you (Mahalo) again to everyone

Lol, ish fun :D

Ok! So after talking to my son, he is exciting in the idea of building it himself. We are going to use Omega's-How to Build a Computer - Step by Step (With Photos). And plan to use newegg.com. But i've noticed some of the hardware he suggest to get isn't available anymore. I need to know everything to get. The Thermal Compound and all. Also intel or AMD? i7 or quad? Size of power supply. Everything I need for around $1000.

There are dozens of people here that will walk you through the process step by step;) This will be a rewarding experience for your son also. He will learn a lot and it will be much more satisfying in the end.

Now for parts...

Do you have anything for computer parts right now? (monitor, keyboard, mouse?) Or do you want everything new?

You wont need any extra thermal interface material, as the heatsink that comes with the cpu will have a pre applied change phase material on the base of it. However, if you want to remove that and use a higher quality material i recommend G751 one of the better thermal interface materials for the price:

@Scout, earlier on the poster replied they had a monitor, keyboard, and mouse;)

Thank you Scout!! I've been surfing the net for info on gaming computers for about a month now. This forum has been the MOST helpfully by far. He already has a 22-Inch LCD Monitor, keyboard and mouse. Now we just need EVERYTHING else.
