Installing Windows 7 on Another old laptop..

So, this will be the 11th computer I'm installing win7 on and this is by far the oldest and crappiest specs..but the owner insists on the upgrade and she cant afford a new machine or upgraded components..so I said I'll do it with no promises..lol

Intel Celeron D 2.6ghz
40GB IDE HDD 4200rpm
704MB of DDR pc-2100 RAM (512mb+256mb) minus 64mb for gpu
ATI Mobile Radeon 9000 (64mb) igp
15" lcd (1280x800 res)
CD-R/DVD ROM
Windows XP Home SP3

Its so loaded with crap right now, like toolbars, trial software, bugs, junkware..etc

I'm actually anxious to see what the result will be..

What do you think?

Clean install is not a possibility?

I honestly think it would be a (slight) risk, but I can't tell for sure since I've never actually performed a Windows upgrade or seen it done first-hand.

If she insists on an upgrade and you can't wipe the computer clean first, I'd do her a favour and get rid of as much of the junk as possible, and do a basic spyware/virus scans (Malwarebytes to the rescue).

Hardware-wise, while on the weaker side, it is doable.

It should run fine. It runs on lesser specs.

Graphics may be the only issue, as Aero doesn't always work with integrated cards.

hackapelite--sorry I mis-typed...the 'upgrade' she wants is the switch to win7, I will most certainly be doing a clean install cause all this trash on here need to go away!!

bodaggit--yeh, i think the graphics is not going to be able to do aero..but she isnt a gamer and just needs a working machine that doesnt take days to open programs..

That's good, but Windows 7 without Aero is a much different experience overall.

Lots of visual goodies, like Aero Peek, won't work.

You never know though.

If you're doing a clean install - like bodaggit said, Aero may not work, but that aside, the hardware should be capable of running it reasonably well, as long as it's used for just the basics.

Yeah, I know that without AERO it loses its niceness of the interface but, I think she just does do the basics and this thing is essentially bogged down to the point its useless.

I guess the alternative is going to vista but thats probably a worse option..

XP isnt in the cards cause she doesnt have her disks anymore and I dont have a business license of XP-32 bit.

So WIN7 seems like only choice, I suppose.

it will work it will be lacking aero and sometimes performance. aero requires 128mb of memory and a DX9 card i believe for win7.
