Backlite on Laptop

I just got a 4yr old laptop for FREE from my step-dads work. The backlite for the screen is burnt out or broken. He had gotten a quote of $500 to fix it. So he obviously said no thanks. Then they offered to recycle it for free, I said heck with that i'll buy it from you.

Anyways long story short, its mine. Step-dad just has to get some more documents off the hard drive and then its mine. The laptop works just fine when plugged into an external monitor. Therefor the graphics works its just the screen backlit. Anyone know where I can get a replacement screen and do it myself? Will get part no. soon but, looking for advice in advance.

Try ebay, that's where i got a replacement lcd for my mom's ancient compaq laptop and it worked great.

Yeah I was just looking and they are not as expensive as I thought. Is it fairly easy to replace one? Do I have to replace the whole screen or is the backlite replaceable?

I honestly don't know about replacing the backlight, I wouldn't think you could.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to replace just unscrew the old one, undo the connectors and slip the new one in, simple.

Update: Step dad got all the files off of that his boss needed. He's running a defrag on it then its mine to work on. I most likely will end up reformatting it anyways.

Found ccfl's on ebay for like $5-10 each so this should be a cheap fix. Gonna be picking them up on Tues and fixing this bad boy

Actually, i would start by changing the inverter. It is far more common for the inverter to fail in notebooks than the ccfl's themselves. Got a model number of the notebook?

Usually if all the backlight on a laptop goes out it points moreso to the inverter, but sometimes they are wired as if one ccfl goes out they all do.

^^ Yeah I already got it all apart and ready for the parts. I can see why they would charge so much to replace the screen. It's a pain in the neck and requires alot of patience.

Came to say this myself but you beat me to it. 9 times out of 10 when a back light goes bad it is the inverter board that needs to be replaced and typically this is like a $5 to $10 part.

Finally got shipped out

Gosh payapl is slow at transactions

You have to wait an additional 5 days now while they process the funds, due to too many scammers trying to rip people off. It pissed off a lot of ebayers that liked instant transactions.
