Slow Vista Startup

Hey guys. I've noticed that my Vista is taking much longer at the loading screen than at first. How can I minimize the time that it takes at the loading screen?

Click Start, and type msconfig into the Search box.

Click on the Startup tab.

Uncheck any box that has a "Command" location of "Program Files"
or "Users" EXCEPT if it has something to do with your Antivirus software.

Next, click the Services tab.

Check the box that says "Hide all Microsoft services".
Uncheck any box you don't want to run at startup.

Click OK, click Apply, restart your computer.

you can disable plenty of MS services too that will make your computer faster and less vulnerable to hackers and malware. example:

Remote Registry (very hard for hackers if you turn this off)
Remote Desktop (same deal)
BitLocker
Windows CardSpace
Remote Desktop Configuration
Remote Desktop Services
Windows Defender
Parental Controls
Security Center
Windows Search

Disabling these has no negative impacts, but increases speed and decreases memory usage. (my windows 7 now uses less than 400mb of RAM when idle - with AVG and catalyst running)

To tell you the truth I've done many service disabling and it has not done much. I also defragment and do a disk cleanup regularly. Only have a few startup programs (AVG, coretemp, IDM)

As a first step, I never suggest turning off any MS services, as they're not
usually the ones causing the problem.

There's your problem.

It's a bloated turd compared to Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira AntiVir.

It will slow down a system with older specs.

Linkin93, you're talking about the maximum memory and number of processor thing right? If so yes I've done it but it didn't speed up. Maybe by default Vista uses max memory and the max number of processors.

No, Vista doesn't default to max.

try some general computer cleaning with CCleaner, some sort of disk frag. also, delete all your temp files.

Start > Run > %temp%

select everything and hold shift and delete.

Also clear your recycle bin.

If you have a lot of icons on your desktop maybe arrange them into seperate folders as this has been known to help with gneeral performance.

When checking the fragmentation levels of your drive, check to make sure that the page file is not fragmented at all. I have seen several systems brought to there knees recently because of this.

By the way, what version of AVG do you have installed? I have seen older versions of AVG and a few other utilities fight with each other on startup causing major delays.

The easiest way (unless you have software that will do it before the system boots), is to simply disable virtual memory, reboot, and then re-enable it. This basically recreates the page file in an single, contiguous space on the hard drive. I would also recommend degragging the whole drive once again after virtual memory is turned off to eliminate any stragglers that might have been in between the page file fragments.
