Running a 4650 with GTX275? for tri/quad screens?

I'm about to buy a 3rd screen for my computer, and another graphics card to run my tri screens (and maybe quad screens 1 day).

i currently have a GTX275, just need another card to run quad screens, I was looking at getting a 9400GT but then saw that the 4650's were same price (in New Zealand), and i know the 4650's are good performers, but then running ATI with Nvidia on the same computer?? heard i might run into some troubles but it does work.

What kinda troubles would i run into? or am i just better off getting the crappyer 9400gt to be safe? I just need a card that can support Dual 1080p videos is my standard.

If you are on about 2 cards in one system, you can only run certain Cards together in SLI or Crossfire.

First off, you need to find out if it supports SLI or if it supports crossfire, it will only support one.

Then, you need the same type of card as what you already have, so for you, only a second gtx275 would work with it.

not trying to run SLI, the GTX275 is already powerful enough for my gaming needs,

I just needa a extra card for extra monitors/desktop space.

Using different cards to get more monitor output just not possible. What aastii said is entirely correct. It doesn't matter whether you want more horsepower or not, it just the rules you have to obey. If you still insist, get ATI HD 5xxx card and run Eyefinity.

... I've already setup systems b4 with different graphic cards, I know this is definitely doable.. what I haven't done is used both ATI and Nvidia on the same system.

Can you expand on how you did it before, because on any SLI or crossifre motherboard, it can handle any SINGLE card, but as soon as you use more than one, you can only use nvidia or ati cards, depending on chipset, and then they have to be of the same model.

For example, I have 2 8600gt's in my system, I couldn't have put in 1 8600gt and one 8800gt, I couldn't have put in 1 gtx 280 and 1 8600gt, they have to be of the same type, not necessarily the exact same model and manufacturer, just the same chip

From what i know you can run an ati and nvidia card on the same board - but you cannot install the nvidia control panel or catalyst control center - only the drivers for each card.

I was just about to ask this question too, so I can install a Radeon HD4830 for my other 2 monitors and keep the 4870 for my gaming monitor?

Yeah I don't know what you guys are talking about. I've ran a ati and nvdidia cards together before and didn't run into a problem.

He's not running SLI how is that so hard to understand? Running two independent video cards on a system is entirely doable and running ati and nvidia cards together works too (just a bit more complicated to set up).

Its pretty simple you plug it into your extra PCI-E slot and then install drivers, then plug in your monitor and in the control pannel you select the card you want it to run on and off you go.

I had just never tried it with both ATI and Nvidia, and heard I may have some troubles

Lots of other people have done this without SLI, cheap way to get extra monitors.

Thanks everyone for your input. I decided to go with a 9500GT to save me CCC and NCP issues.

Yeah you can get a 4830 for your other 2 monitors, but you won't get any performance boost in your 4870.

I had only started this thread to find out about using both brands on setup.

Oh i see, well I guess you learn something new every day, I thought to have 2 cards in they had to be linked with an SLI or crossfire cable, but apparently not :P

So yes, you can run ATi and nVidia cards together for tri/quad screens.

Gareth: Lets see a desk picture

I wanna see how it looks

I have been wanting to go with triple 22" monitors for a while now

Its 2x 19" Wide and a 22" Wide, the one on the far left is my Dads main LCD for his PC, I just borrowed it to see what it would be like.

When I come back from the states next week, ill buy a new monitor which matches up with the height of my other two and arrange them more neatly.

And I have Catalyst Control Centre and nVidia Control Panel installed on mine together with no problems?

Yes, a bigger desk is a must now. But I am not too sure how id get one in, since this is the biggest desk I can get in this room, lol
