My computer freezes then wont start

My friend said that my computer freezing is cos of hardware problem. I am not able to use mouse and keyboard, switch off computer from the back and then keep trying until it will start again. If it is a hardware problem does anyone know a software which will scan/check my hardware and tell me the problem?

Well... If it is RAM there are tests such as Memtest (http://www.memtest.org/). If it's your hard drive, you could find diagnostic tools from your drive manufacturer's website (get the brand through Device Manager). Aside from those, there's not much else you can really test.

Just because the computer locks up, though, isn't a sure sign that it's hardware. At what point does it lock up. You mention the mouse so I assume it's once in Windows, but at any specific point? Is there anything new that's been loaded? Any hardware changes or new drivers updated?

i did buy an external key logger and when I plugged that into the back of my own computer it froze, but it froze afterwards when I didnt plug that in.

It just seems to lock up after a short while of loading the computer.

I did a virus scan with avast and nothing was found

First try to run the simple Ubuntu 9.04 OS from the CD and if it's working properly, then its NOT the hardware issue. Its probably something wrong in Windows OS...

Anyway try this:

-Go into the "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and type the following command:

chkdsk C: /f /r

(Where "C:" is the partition where your Windows OS is installed)...
Now press the ENTER button on your keyboard and the disk checking process will start. If it asks you that it will perform the disk checking process the next time you restart the computer and then you get choice "Y" and "N",type "Y" then press the ENTER button on your keyboard and then type the following command to restart your computer:

Shutdown.exe -s -t 0

Now press the ENTER button on your keyboard and the computer will restart.

-After the computer has restarted, the disk checking process will start. The process may take a VERY long time so let it finish!
-When the process is complete, your computer will restart automatically

Now see if the computer still freezes. If it does,it might be the registry issue too.Download and install the program called "Eusing free registry cleaner" and scan your computer with it and clear ALL the invalid registry that was found!

-Restart your computer...

Try all this and tell us if it helped...

Cheers dude!

Ok I will try that tonight with my housemate, he is good at computers.

A question if it is a virus surely that couldnt stop the whole computer from switching off unless I unplug at the wall? That is the only way i can switch it off when it freezes. Also it usually doesnt boot up and start again when I switch it back on from the wall. I have to keep trying and eventually it does.

ok I did the chkdsk C: /f /r and it seemed ok as it just restarted afterwards when i tried-

chkdsk E: /f /r it got to checking 4/5 in the first verification stage and wouldnt get past 0 perecent. So I guess i couldnt check my other hard drive my E drive?

ALWAYS PERFORM THE DISK CHECKING INSIDE OF THE "Safe Mode" OR "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" IN THIS KIND OF CASES AND NEVER CANCEL THE DISK CHECKING PROCESS!IF ITS 0% EVEN FOR 20 MINUTES,DO NOT CANCEL IT!THE DISK CHECKING PROCESS CAN TAKE A VERY LONG TIME ON SOME DRIVES DEPENDING ON ITS SIZE,FILE DATA AND MANY OTHER THINGS!
I REPEAT: LEAVE THE DISK CHECKING PROCESS TO FINISH!BE PATIENTE!DO NOT CANCEL IT!

You can also defragment your HDD...

Also install "Eusing free registry cleaner" and after you have installed it,go to "Edit->Options" and make sure that EVERYTHING IS CHECKED THERE.Then click "OK" to save changes and also be sure that on the left side EVERYTHING IS ALSO CHECKED.If it is,click the button called "Scan registry issue" and leave the scan process to finish. After it's done, you will probably have MANY registry issues. Now simply just click the button called "Repair registry issue".After ALL the registry that was found was now repaired (cleared),exit the program and restart your computer.

Of course the computer might work like crap also if it has a bad Windows install,if its full of viruses or if the hardware is damaged...
But lets not go that far yet.First try all the above things I mentioned and see if it helped ;)

Cheers!

ok the E drive like the C drive seemed fine after the disk checking process. does that fix problems as well as check?

Ok I will search for - Eusing free registry cleaner from downloads.com and google

also did registry clean up

and avast virus search again nothing was found however some areas it couldnt scan, my computer hasnt frozen for the last two days

Well I havent plugged the external keylogger into the keyboard port for a long while, the computer was running fine for a day then suddenly it froze again even with the keylogger was not plugged in. i had to switch it off from the switch on the back of the computer and it wouldnt start again.

Another forum asked me to check the

Ok i checked hardware manager and there is a big yellow question mark next to other devices and linked to other devices is a question mark next to universal serial bus USB controller

Should i clean the internal parts of my computer check nothing has come apart or loose? My computer sometimes works then sometimes freezes.
