GTX 295 or GTX 285 SLI

I was told the 285 sli would be faster by many people online, when i was at the place building my pc for me the guy insisted I was only going to get around 40-50% of that second gpu and that the 295 would be faster, and i can upgrade with another 295 when i have the money. Which do i chose????

Edit: The guy also said the 295 he had was a limited addition version if that matters.
 
Although I dont have any experience with sli, the sticky mentioned it being about 40%. Limited edition sounds like bullshit to me though, unless they mean a holiday savings deal or package.
 
if i recall, a gtx 295 is two gtx285's in one chip, so i imagine performance wouldnt be to much different, but the 285's in sli would perform better. and that guy's bs'in you about the limited edition crap.

The 295 is a mix between the 260 and 280 i think. I doubt he's bsing me its a family friend.
 
The 295 indeed is a limited edition card. Its only purpose was to steal the performance crown back from ATI, but it was too expensive to manufacture so they made it limited edition because they actually lost a good amount of money for each one of those things sold, and selling anything that incurs a loss in unlimited amounts would be really bad as far as profit margins go.

And no, it's not actually two 285s, it's two 275s in one package... the 275 being a slightly cut-down version of the 285 to reduce power consumption and therefore cooling requirements because in its normal form 2x285 would put out far too much heat for a dual-GPU card.
 
They don't make limited edition chips... unless they used some different paint scheme on the fan or something.

EDIT: Well, nevermind. but it definitely isnt profitable.

well, he might not be bsing you, he probably just doesnt have his facts right, cause the 295 isnt limited edition. but 2 gtx285's would beat a 295 but it will cost more. a 295 can max out any game.
 
Hmmm alright well he has two builds for me, I guess ill check tomorrow and see if i can mix them and get the 285's SLI. Also one more question he said he had a 700watt PSU for me and i said isn't that kinda low and he said its a good psu and i need to worry about amps not watts, is he right?
