Recovered "system recovery" partition: Can I put it on new drive?

I recently had a hard drive fail on my laptop. I was able to recover my data as well as the "system restore/recovery" partition.

Due to the fact that my computer did not come with a seperate Windows XP disk, I really need my "system restore/recovery" partition to be put one my new hard drive so I can install xp.

How? How do I put the partition on the hard drive so when the computer boots up it gives me an option of doing a system restore?

any help would be appreciated.

To make it work as it used to we'd have to know exactly what kind of computer it is. But assuming it simply boots to some OS to reload the other partition, you should be able just make another partition using any software then find some kind of boot loader/boot menu/partitioning software of your choice. Once the partition is there, it's simply a matter of setting the partition active.

It is an HP Pavillion Laptop.

Darn... I wish you'd had this question about 2-3 weeks ago. I was given an HP laptop with the original OS still on it. I could have researched it a bit more

I am actually surprized that this question has not come up more considering the majority of laptops that come in to repair have no seperate operating disk, instead it is on a seperate partition.

Wonder if that is a scam by Microsoft knowing that when you need a new hard drive, you will have to buy XP?

Hmm... I recall looking into this when I had my old laptop, trying to move the recovery partition to another drive or DVD. I guess most people don't bother upgrading their hard drives in laptops, or just reload using a fresh copy of Windows.

You know what you should do? Reload the computer then make an image using something like Norton Ghost. It might not be the "original" image, but I've done this a few times and it's very quick and reliable.

I don't think it's anything with Microsoft, more just the computer manufactures. Since hard drive space is so abundant today, most people wouldn't miss 10GB or so. So they won't need to ship all the CDs/DVDs and such. Plus it's much easier than trying to reload each thing, and it's always with the laptop.

that's the manufacturers way of cutting back costs.

my laptop came with instructions to create restore disks from the recovery partition, which you could use on any disk drive; i assume other brands do the same.

perhaps if the old drive is operational enough to go into the recovery console you can still manage to create these disks.
