Battery Back-up

They are nice to have, especially if you have really important stuff on your system. It gives you time to safely shut down your computer when the power goes out, so if the power goes out kind of frequently in your area, I would invest in one. Sometimes when the computer is abruptly shut off by loss of power there is hard drive damage.

Any specific ones you recommend. I kinda get lost looking at all of the choices. Assume that money is not a concern (within reason).

What electronic stores are near you and I can give you specific links to ones they have if they have a website.

Anyone familiar with the APC line of surge protector/battery back-ups? Are they any good or is it just hype?

APC is the leader in battery backups and surge protectors. They've been dominating the market for many years. They have different models of their products, the more industrial stuff is better quality than the household stuff. I wouldn't buy any other brand. Notoriously reliable and dependable.

What are you trying to protect?

Just a new desktop I built. Looks like APC is the way to go.

APC is definitely the way to go. If it's for a small desktop, you can get away with any small UPS. If you're on a budget, look for something like the Smart UPS 700, or something similar. The 700 has 450W and offer great power filtering capability. Something like this would would great on a small system.
