Just bought a new hard drive and Windows 7 does not want to install on it. It says that it cannot create a partition. Do I have to create a parition using diskpart???

Do a disk diagnostic on the drive first. It may be bad. What brand of hard drive is it, so I can link you to their diagnostic utility download.

It says system was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing one.

You may also want to put that drive in another system as slave and use disk management to initialize the disk and then try again to install. I had that issue one time with a western digital drive. But I have a feeling that drive is bad. I wouldn't recommend hitachi, either get Seagate or Western Digital.

I think I solved the problem. It was installed as disk 1 and I put it as disk 0 and seems to be working now.

You should disconnect any existing hard drives so you don't accidently install to the wrong drive and lose all your important data.
