Formatting HD Problems

Hey everyone, I am trying to format the HD on my Dell Laptop. Its been giving me issues and finally decided to just start over clean.

I am going to the C prompt through windows. It comes up as C:\documentandsettings\user When I type in Format C: it goes through its saying that it will delete all info on the HD. I type Y to continue. It then says the HD is mounted to another component. It asks if you want to dismount it, and I type in Y. It then comes back and says it is not able to dismount the HD.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there another way to get to the C prompt?

Thanks

Shawn

just format it with a windows disc

I tried that as well, but as it goes through the repair, it gets about halfway through it an the computer shuts off completely, powers down etc. I am hooked up through the adapter for power from an electrical outlet.

You can't format your c drive from within windows. You need to boot to the install cd, delete existing partitions, repartition, and then format and install the OS.

Well I finally got it to reformat.

I reinstalled windows xp and and spent most of the night with automatic updates. LOL.

I began to install some of my previous software today. I got about 4 programs in and was in the middle of installing the 5th one and I got a blue screen.

It said : Stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error} Windows subsystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of Ox c0000005 (Ox7c9106c3 Ox00b2f36c)

System has shut down.

So do I need to start over, or is something wrong with my hard drive?

Thanks

Ok, I think I found the issue. When I was installing my point of sale program it changed the registry key. Must be the new version or something as I did not have those issues before when I was running it.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm just trying to limp this computer along till I can buy all the components to build my own.
