OC'ing Athlon II x4 620 (2.6 GHz)

Well, I'm going to try OC'ing for the first time, you gotta start somewhere I guess :o, first question: is it safe to OC using a stock HS/Fan? If #1 = yes, then how far do you think I can push it with the stock heatsink and fan without overheating my CPU?

Specs are in my siggy if you're interested.

#1=yes if, and only if, the temps never exceed 70c, which is the max of your cpu.

prime 95 has gotta be the best test for ocing, but make sure u watch the temps, as 95 really rips on ur pc. i would try going to 2.8, test for 2 hours, and if that works maybe 3.0

I mean for a pre-OC test, I know Prime95 works, but should I run it for the same amount of time?

yea, just run it for id say 15-30 minutes before oc'ing. running it for 2hrs just checks for stability

haha, my pentium 4 at stock clocks runs at low 70's in prime 95...
don't think thats a good sign lol... maybe i just need some new thermal paste?

sorry about semi hijacked tread!

Whoa, 70C? I think you should remove the your thermal paste and reapply, and check that the heatsink/fan is seated properly on the CPU.

I'll be watching this thread :P I got my 620 back in october :) its sitting at 2890 right now no voltage boost id push further but my motherboard sucks lol
you should be able to hit 3 ghz with that stock heat sink if your case has decent flow

also quick question when amd c&q is activated does your multiplier jump around irraticaly?(sp?) like mine drops below the lowest multiplier and goes to about 400 mhz at times when my processor is at idle the multiplier changes back and forth as well

Well, it'll be my first OC, so we'll see, but... Prime95 ran into an error for my third core at about 4hrs and my second at about 7hrs (I ran it overnight pre-OC), is there anyway I can tell what the stability problem is? This is my primary computer and I don't want to trash it ;)

If your planning on overclocking then you need a better heatsink. You can bump your vcore to 1.4 or 1.45 and it should be fine for 24/7 operation. This will increase the temps and yeild a higher overclock. I do not think this is trashing the cpu if you have the right cooler. What is vcore set to stock ?? This is bascially a 955 than has been underclocked and has no L3 cache or unlocked multiplier.

Really has less in common with a 955/965 then other Phenom II X4. Clocked lower/locked/No L3. Its just 4 Deneb cores with no L3. Its really has the most in common with a 810 with no L3.

Stable at 55C, going to 2.99 (3.0ghz), think I'll have to buy an after-market cooler and bump the voltages up and see how far I can go, I believe it's 3.7ghz?
