Automatic Updates

i've been told to turn off automatic windows updates. [i'm using xp]
i've heard my computer could be attacked by threats.

that's ironic.

do you keep your automatic update on?

mine is off. I do it manually once a month. i check for updates and choose custom, not auto. always take critical and security updates. i read the info on the other updates and check it if i want it. as far as your comment it may be true. makes since and may be a back door for illegal activity.

Yeah, I have never trusted any site/program/OS that allows anything to automatically install on my computer without my knowledge.
That is the biggest open door in my opinion, so set it to inform you and then you decide.

yeah, i'm very fond of my computers so i do manual updates. also, with windows 7, if you're not careful it will install drivers that may not be the best for your setup. i really really hated that with the beta. it's disabled by default in the final product, but that was about the first thing i disabled after installation, auto updates.

I've never needed to install a single driver on any of the 10-15 installs of Windows 7.

I must confess, I don't keep Windows Update on "full auto", so it tells me when there's updates available, and then I choose what to install.

if you game you might find a time when you are gaming and your ping goes sky high due to these autoamtic updates!

set your update to times when the least chance of you gaming is going to be, i do what bodaggit does but i set my download time to when im not gaming

I always completely turn off the automatic updates!

LoL people whats the point of so many updates???It spents more and mroe space on your HDD and many times your Windows OS gets screwed after their installation. If eveything on your computer works like charm,THERE IS NO NEED for the new updates.Update ONLY THOSE things that do not work properly such as if the graphic card driver doesn't work well in some games so update ONLY that driver, but there is REALLY NO NEED for so many updates. As long as everything works properly,UPDATES ARE NOT NECCESSARY.I haven't reinstalled my XP OS since 2004. If I was installing so many updates,I would reinstall my XP OS for so many times until today...

ADVICE: Updates in most cases screw up your Windows OS and then you need to do the complete reinstallation what is really terrible.UPDATE ONLY THOSE THINGS THAT REALLY NEEDS TO BE UPDATED IF THEY ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY ON SOME NEWER PRODUCTS SUCH AS NEWEST GAMES AND SO ON!!!

Cheers!

Wow... they release those updates to prevent future attacks on your system, once a threat is identified they release a patch that fixes it, there is no reason you should not get those updates. I also have never had a problem with them messing things up.

You're probably the type of person who turns off the firewall and has no AV or spyware protection, right? Because after all, if you've never had a virus then there is no point in installing one...
