my computer over heats!! help

smokey!

howdy everyone! my first post here, sorry its a question, i just cant figure out whats causing this overheating

it just turns off occasionally and then when i restart it, it says it had turned off due to a thermal event (overheating)

i cleaned all the dust off from the insides of my cpu when it happened a couple of days back but its re-occuring, by blowing air into it. all the fans (processor fan, power supply fan, gfx card fan and one additional cabinet fan) are all working fine. so now there is no dust or any cable getting in the way. also, its winter time here the room temperature remains 10-20 degree Celsius. its got plenty of air room on all sides too. its a 6 months old assembled computer.

the computer is NOT overclocked! is there something i can check or fix myself?

config:
intel core2duo 2.8ghz
intel DG35EC mobo
vindows vista
2gig ram
500gb sata hdd
nvidia geforce 9600gt gfx card
maya audiophile 4/4 sound card
i-ball power supply, dont remember the rating but its meant to take this load according to the vendor
let me know if you need to know anything more

If your heatsink is not sitting right on the cpu or if the heatsink is not powerful enough, then it will cause your cpu to overheat. When your cpu overheats it will automatically turnoff to prevent damage.

What kind of heat sink do you have?

for the pc to shut down and show that information means you can rule out your psu, it sounds like cpu issues....

did you build this pc? how long ago was it built?

it was assembled by the vendor about 6 months back.
how do i find out about the heat sink? is it a part of the motherboard, then what i have is a INTEL DG 35EC

if the heatsink was defective or not installed correctly im sure this fault would have happened within a few hours of using it!

can you operate your pc with the panel off the side and see if the cpu fan is spinning up fast?

if its not spinning up but spinning slow you might have a defective cpu fan!

yes the panel is off and the fans are running as fast as they do. the thing is, this over heating is occasional and random, last whole night it was on and no issues and then it suddenly turned off for no reason after like 12 hours. then right now it just restarted after 15 minutes of turning it on:confused:

maybe a faulty heat sensor, you might need to take this back to the vendor....

Shouldn't we be helping him find the temp of his CPU before we recommend what's wrong with his PC.

Core temp
speedfan
and a few other apps

can be easily downloaded and installed to view the temp of your CPU - GPU - and other components. If your CPU is within a normal range - adn the computer shuts down - that's probably not your trouble spot.

yes you are right, i just went off the op's word presuming its never been tampered with and he bought it from a vendor he can take it back!

cpu temp will be rising to cause thermal shutdown, the motherboard is programed to do this!

if it wasnt sold to you from a vendor i would suggest you checked the thermal paste etc but if you can get them too look at it for you free of charge go do it!!

save your time and save your warantee by messing, if they have no warantee etc we will help you

i bought the parts from a vendor, he took some more money to assemble it. i have the warranty on the parts but he will charge to get it looked at and i am doubtful about the guys here, they do not seem to know much.

see if this can help. also, how can i configure them to store all data so that i can see what went wrong at the time of the over heat event?

edit: sorry this is the temperature left to tjmax before it over heats, so both the cores are actually around 30-40C. sorry for the confusion

thats not the highest ive seen, can you record the temp just before it fails?

is that 61oC idle?

Yeah, watch the temperature right when it fails and restarts and then post it up here. That 30 degrees is low so I don't know how it jumps a whole 30 degrees up.
