Vacuuming Computers?

Here's one question I haven't seen addressed - is it OK to use a vacuum on the inside of the computer case? After completing my first build, I took apart my 4 year old HP and it was full of dust and dog hair. It made me wonder if I should be doing something periodically to keep it clean. Am I crazy to think this?

Also what about care for keyboard?

Appreciate the feedback.

i air spray my computers every three or four months, especially the antec 900, it moves a lot of air and accumulates lots of dust. but i also have makeshift filters for the fans, so that helps a bit. they sell these cans at best buy, walmart, etc.

i've used the vacuum when air spraying to catch the dust bunnies, that way they don't settle back in the computer case. don't use brushes, and only from a distance. you don't want to suck in a loose cable or jumper.

i took apart a two yr old computer because it was constantly rebooting. turns out the cpu heatsink was caked in dirt and no air was getting to it causing it to overheat. for this i took it off and washed it by hand, then applied fresh thermal compound. so yeah, you need to clean them periodically.

if you have pets, then i would recommend you clean your computer at least once a month, if only just spray and vacuum. once you get a feel for how dirty it gets, you can adjust your cleaning schedule from there.

as for the keyboard, just turn it over and spray some air through the keys. if its really dirty, like if you eat at your desk you can wipe it down with some cleaning solution and a lint free rag and/or q-tips, or they should have something at your local electronics store for this too but is not necessary. iff it's really really nasty, i've heard of some people running them through the dishwasher, i would just buy a new one.

The small hand vacuums work well. I know someone who is an intel rep and says its the safest. You have to open the tower. take outside or to the garage. blow from the inside and out. i goto a office supply and buy 1/2 dozen static free air cans. don't turn the can upside down. they have a oil base. If you keep your tower on the floor it is likely clogged.

Thanks zombine. When you airspray and vacuum, are you removing the cover of the case?
Also have you seen those small hand held vacuums that are "supposed" to be useable on computers?

yes, open it up and get in there.

i use a regular household vacuum. again, be careful, they are quite powerful. i've never used those computer vacs, but if you think it'll help you or are not comfortable with a regular vac, then go for it. it might also help you with your keyboard. if you get a pc vac, get one with a hose, the one you linked didn't seem to have one. :)

If you keep your tower on the floor it is likely clogged.

yep, try moving your computer out of your pet's way. that will help you keep it clean.

I don't go near my computer with a vacuum because they create static electricity.

I blow my pc's out with compressed air once a month, whether it needs it or not.

I always knew doing this was risky, but it was easy so I used a vacuum cleaner anyway. I'm pretty sure it friend my motherboard eventually. I have no idea why else the motherboard would die like that and neither did the company when they replaced it...

which is why you only vacuum the particles in the air, after they leave the computer. you loosen them up with the air can and then suck them up.

Well, for a quickie clean (not a full one) I usually use a vacuum with the bristle attachment on it, it is simple and I don't reckon it creates that much static, if it does it can be grounded easily I reckon. But for my full cleans, when I take apart the full thing, I use a air compressor blower thing to get most of the dust and such out and for the hard places just a paint brush really.
It works.

Vacuuming is a bad idea because of static,id never do it with everything in the case.

The only time i have used a Vacuum inside my pc is when the case was compleatly empty due to upgrading and i thought id give the case a good clean before putting in the new stuff.
