you can also narrow it down a bit as am i right in saying older cpus have their underside loads of small pins and i recently fitted a new intel duo core it was different it, it had flat gold contacts where the pins used to be and a new kind of bit right in the middle.
do you know exactly what cpu it is pentium duo core, quad core etc but id simply check the cpu and see if it has pins or flat then check cpu holder on the motherboard and see if it is the pin type with all the holes for the pins to go into.
well it seems a very quick, easy and obvious way to check without wasting time hunting down motherboard specs etc. sometimes people can over complicate things.
