HDTV As Monitor

Got a DVI to HDMI lead today so that i can watch HD stuff on my PC and my TV recommends that i should have the resolution set at 1920 x 1080, but some of my task-bar and my icons are missing because it seems as though my TV does not support 1080. Also i am currently wondering if my current resolution which is at 720p 1176 x 664 is better quality than my monitor which is 1440 x 900?

Thanks Chriisy.

you have a problem with overscan which i think nvidia tried to fix this ati havent done so good

try
1368 * 765

(i think thats it not a home atm) works for me and it is in hd im using a vga cable not sure if the dvi to hdmi cable supports this tho

1360 x 768 it was for me.

1368 x 765 would be a screwed up aspect ratio.

Find exactly what resolution your TV runs at. Even though overscan was more of a "feature" for older CRT TVs, I've still noticed some HDTVs (my father's included) tend to have their picture slightly beyond the edge.

I've noticed that for some reason, my TV doesn't support anything but 960x600 when I connect my PC to it. I even set my PC's res to the HDTV's native res (1366x768) and all it does is lose the signal between the PC and TV. Not sure what's happening here.

guys, also remember, DVO to HDMI will still output a DVI quality

you will only get true HD quality if you have an HDMI connector on your gfx card...

and i guarantee you, you wont notice a difference between 1920 x 1080 (using DVI) and HD (which is also 1920 x 1080)

if you look in the control panel for your gpu (catalist control center for ati, nvidia control panel for invidia...right click desktop an select which ever you have) there will be an option for scaling. 1st select 1920x1080, apply, then find the scaling option, you will get a slider or 2 for adjusting over/under scanning. move them until the screen fits, apply and you running good

DVI and HDMI are identical. There won't be any difference between the two, whether you have an HDMI port on the card or use a converter/cable. There is no conversion between the two, it's simply a straight through connection with different plugs on either end. The only difference DVI can carry analog video and HDMI can carry audio.

+1 they are the same, just one has audio and the other dous not, although that also depends on the video card. i have my setup running a dvi to hdmi adapter and a wire coming from the motherboard jumper for digital out to my gtx260 input and it carries audio throught the dvi to hdmi cable
